Recently when i have gone to start my car, my starter doesn't engage properly and just spins. I then let off the key and try again and it engages properly. Could my solenoid be sticking for some reason? or wearing out? Also its been really cold here, and it just started in this cold weather, so i can't tell you if it does it in warm weather too.

Actually, if the engine is warm it doesn't seem to do it. So my comment about not knowing if it does it in cold weather doesn't really stick. But still just for added info i'll leave that as a clue to what might be going on.

What starters fit? i heard that starters from E28 E30 E24 E23 E12 all fit engines from that model.

Anyone have any input on what the problem may be? or where i can get a starter without paying exaggerated prices that many car shops have for BMW related parts?

thanks.

p.s.: this car has been too much trouble for me. Sad to say. But i blame it on age. its an 84 318i

Give the solenoid a tap and see if that helps anything. Frankly I'm having the same issue on the SHO sporadically. I think it might be corroded wiring or chipped flywheel teeth because I have replaced the starter.

You MIGHT want to try your run of the mill NAPA or auto-zone. They might have a starter for your application. It looks like NAPA has a Bosch one for $130....

Just a thought!

it most likely is a bad fly wheel,, on those cars there is a sensor on the tranny that acts as a positoning senor,, if the fly wheel starts to wear out than it cant read that sensor thats why it just spins sometimes,,,, look at you flywheel and see what shape the teeth are in,,,,if they look worn than that is your problem
