Well I have about 82K on my 2001 330ci and have never replaced the brakes. I have never thought to do this because my brakes feel strong, and could literally stop on a dime.

However upon taking my car to the dealership to install a new lock cylnder, they advised that I should get new brakes.

From what I've been told, brakes on any car should be replaced every 40K

Is this true? I swear my brakes seem good...... any advice would be appreciated.

That is the absolute longest I've heard a 3 series go w/o a brake change of some sort, at least pads (In general, BMW's kill pads about the same time as rotors - it varies from car to car, driver to driver though). You must have like a millimeter left or something before it hits the brake sensor and flips your light on the dash.

Seriously, you have got to need new brakes at 82k. That's damn amazing.. Is that alot of interstate driving or something?

Expect the dealership to quote you around 800 for complete pad and rotor replacement. Likely you do (must by now) need all that done.. If you can DIY, it's about 300-350 for OEM parts for a complete 4 corner brake job on a non-M E46 3 series.

[thumb] Dude that's amazing, 82,000 qnd no brake changes. I change my pads and rotors every 60,000 whether they need it or not. I DIY my brakes, parts generally run about $250.00 for 4 sets of pads and four rotors with sensors. Brake changes on bimmers are really simple. Congrats on the 82,000 miles. Happy Motoring...

Thanks for the responses.

I can't say that I do a lot of interstate driving particularly. But being that I do have a stick, I downshift a lot to slow down instead of braking.

Yeah for the rotors, pads, and sensors the dealer is quoting me near 900 bucks.

I definitely don't know how to do any of this myself so I might as well pay. The question is should I take it to the dealer, or could any mechanic do a decent job?

Thanks every1! [driving]

do you atleast rev match when you down shift because if you arnt that is really bad for the engine. you could also just pull off the wheels and check the pad thick ness yourself

You should buy the parts online and have a reputable (non-dealer) mechanic install the brake system. Simple job should be no more than 1.5 hours (have your mechanic charge you by the hour). Should not amount to 900.

oh and FYI MR FILTH

I mean MR. Ellussive

I bought the car with 28K, I doubt the brakes had been replaced, and even if they were based on standard mileage for replacements they still would be due.
