My leather steer wheel is starting to get pretty worn at 12 o'clock and 8 o'clock. I would love to replace it since my E46 was in the first month of production and they were popping in those HUGE 5er wheels. But new steering wheels are crazy expensive (I guess since they house the air bag).

Anyway…I was thinking about putting a wrap over the wheel. I've seen some that you can sew the lining instead of a thread over the top.

Can anyone recommend a good wrap or alternative that's been sucessful?

I would guess you can pick up a factory E46 steering wheel from someone who
replace it with an M3 wheel.

Check e46fanatics.com, those guys change everything on their cars.

So true! I've been on that site too...they should call that site 'bring your soy sauce' or 'mod'ers haven.' LOL.

Every time I've been there, half the posts are from those guys pushing those form-over-function halo lights. The other half are complaints that their cars died or their batteries have been sucked dry. I'm being a little harsh.

But not a bad idea though...I'll check it out. I might find one on the cheap.

And thanks MrEl...that site you gave has those leather wraps I can sew...would be a little better than a lot I've seen.

well ok. no giggles.. [;)]

Yes, it IS the old VW wrap of days gone by. I just love the feel of it.. I have big hands so I need a thicker steering wheel, this has always just felt perfect to me. Everyone's always telling me to 'change it man, that don't look right, get a wheelskin from xxxxxxx.com' or whatnot.

BTW I replaced my trim!! That Myrtle wood used to be Platinum (I thought it was wierd.. Platinum against a tan interior??). Getting a Myrtle wood shifter in the mail this week to complete the look. And thinking about alcantara shift and ebrake boots to darken the cab a little.

Well, damn! That looks good. And plush.

All the threads that go on the outside that I've seen are all uneven and end up loosening up. What's your secret...or is this right after install?

Hmmmm! I dunno, like I said I got 17 yrs experience putting these on.. [;)]

I do get the 'extra thick' ones, normally the cheapo ones you see really don't 'fit' all the way around, I get these extra big ones, they nearly touch when wrapped around the wheel even before tightening up. I don't 'thread' the string through the holes, I just wrap it around very tight, that's the trick I guess. If you get it tight and even the first time, it's not going to slip or slide anywhere.

I think thats the first [thumb] I've gotten for the wheel ever.

BTW thats about.. 2 months after I bought the car and put it on, and did my interior trim (about 2 weeks ago). I never fool with it or have to 'roll' it back into place, it's there till I clip it off.
