steptronic shifting changes in diff model years?

Friday my 2001 325i was in the shop getting the "final stage unit" replaced (erratic climate control fan speed). My loaner was a 2004 325i. I noticed that on the 2004, to upshift in manual mode you pull back on the stick whereas in my 2001 you push forward to upshift. The shifting direction is reversed. Is there any way to reverse the pattern on my 2001? I liked the "pull back to upshift" version better...felt more natural.

My '01 X5 is opposite of my '04 330Ci. On the X5 the "+" is forward, "-" is backward. On the 330Ci the "-" is forward and the "+" is backward.

If you turn yourself around in the driver seat so you are straddling the seat and facing the rear, the pattern will be reversed..... [joke]

with the pre facelift e46's, BMW had push forward to upshift and pull backward to downshift.

with the facelift, they reversed that because natural forces would have u being pushed backward while acceleration therefore it would only make sense to pull back to upshift and vice versa...

im sure they could probably replace it although it would prob cost ya somethin that isnt worth it...
