Sticking top

I've encountered a problem with my convertible top lowering in extreme heat. This usually occurs when the car has been out in a hot parking lot baking in the sun (over 80 degrees). Just at the point where the top starts to collapse into the compartment (toneau cover has already opened up) it just stops and hangs there. The motor sounds a bit strained at this point. I can easily help it along on its way with a slight nudge as it's hanging over my head. Has anyone else experienced this? Again, it's only when the car has been baking in hot temps.

well its hot here, but no problems all summer........the only time my convertible motor sounds strained is when something has fallen into the convertible chamber....

Yes, I had this same thing happen to me in my '99 328. It didn't happen all the time, but it was extremely annoying. I took it in to my dealership and they had to replace a part in order to get it to work all the time. Sorry, I don't know what the part is.......I'm a girl......I just drop the car off and say fix it please!

Mine hasn't actually stopped, but I have observed differences in performance in hot vs. cooler situations. For example, I recently went to Palm Springs for a few days of R&R, and left my car in an uncovered space for a couple of days. It absolutely BAKED. When I lowered the top, I could (for the first time) hear the pneumatic air springs making a "shush... shush... shush..." sound as the top was lowering itself into the compartment. I guess the heat loosens things up a bit. Now that I'm back in San Francisco (where it's considered a heatwave when the temperature approaches 80) the top is as quiet as ever.

Thanks for the feedback. Yesterday we had highs in the upper 80's. I was putting the top down after work and had my arm up and ready to give it a nudge at that critical point, but much to my surprise it collapsed into the well with no hesitation. Maybe it needs to reach 90! At this point the effort to keep it in motion is so little that it far outweighs the screwing I'd get at the dealer to have a part replaced since I'm outta warranty.

Happy summer motoring! [driving2]
