had the inner door panel off again yesterday. the lifters (ie the metal plates that pull/push the window up and down hook around the rear edge of the each of the two rails. There is is a couple of millimeters movement laterally here. There seems no way of eliminating this movement which is amplified of course higher up the window. If you bang the inner door with your palm it is this movement you hear. As I cannot see round the back of these rails without removing them i would like to know if there is or should be perhaps a small rubber wheel or something like this that should run up and down inside this to prevent the movement. No amount of "tightening" around the glass with electricians plastic tape strips between frame and window rubber surround prevents this movement at the lower ege of the bottom of the glass. ive tried looking behind with a mirror but can see no way of eliminating this "play". Are new ones tighter...is there play in them too? As these "lifters are metal (to which the cables are attached) i cannot see how they would wear. ....still mystified!

My windows have been rattling since I got my 2002 325 when it was 2 years old. I had the dealership take a look when I had the car in for service. They said there was a service bulletin on rattling windows and they are ordering new trim for all 4 doors. In my car the rattle only happens with the windows all the way up.

The dealers use a silicone spray to lube the windows to get rid of the rattling. It does work but it came back after a few months. I've now bought silicone spray from Home Depot and it also gets rid of the noise for a few weeks. I'm going to use a Qtip and try to lube all the inside track and see if that last longer. I heard the stuff the dealer has works better.

that sounds like another problem. silicone lube wont prevent the glass carrier plates rattling on the two tracks will it? that sounds more like noise coming from friction between rubber and glass.
