sun roof slider broke when I slide it open. No rough handling!
I saw a discussion several months ago abou the subject. It seems it is a common problem for a BMW.

Could you describe just how it broke a little more?
You need to manually move the sunroof sunshade before operating any auto controls. It's definitely the weakest link to the 3 series. Seems the clips are either of poor design or so flimsy (maybe both) that the motor destroys the clips if given the oportunity. Just move the sunshade before you operate the sunroof and you'll be good to go. Mines been out of service three time in two months until I learned. Since learning it's been go to go!

But I thought the shade is designed to open with the sunroof if the shade is closed and you press the button to slide the sunroof back.
This has definitely happened before, just take it to your dealership and have them fix it under warranty.

I just got mine fixed and am reluctant to play with it too much. I think operating it manually causes more damage than using the motor but I may be wrong. I think the problem is that the clips are very flimsy and that if you don't pull ( or push) the shade back in a straight line you can easily damage the clips. I'd love to know the "correct" operating procedure because it's a pain to get it fixed

there is no "correct operating procedure". it's a sunroof!!! open/close, that's it. bmw uses plastic clips and they break all the time no matter how you use it or no matter how often they fix it. bad design...

I called the BMW Arlington dealer and told them about my problem. They said that they never heard about the sun roof problem. And, when I mentioned that I was not the only people who experience the problem, they told me not to pay attention to the internet. They said you all lied! [thumbd]

It is a typical answer from a company who doesn't want to admit that they have problem. [boxface]

I brought my baby to the dealer for them to fix my sun roof cover.

When I came back it was fixed alright, but the one touch feature to close the sun roof from the tilt position doesn't work. I showed them at the spot, but they said that I had to make another appointment to fix that. [mad]

I am very furious! I came there to fix one thing and they break another. [?|]

Surely you don't expect the BMW service people to do a full regression test of the system they are fixing do you? Why should they fully check it out after they muck with it?

This is a classic BMW service visit you experienced. I feel your pain (as I have had it for myself multiple times before). [nutkick] [chair]

if you read the manual, one thing you are NOT supposed to do is try and close the headliner if you have the sunroof open. This may cause damage. So for starters make sure the sunroof is closed before trying to close the headliner

So your sunroof shade broke, and not your sunroof?

My sunroof shade has broken twice.

The first time, I didn't realize it was broken until the shade was
unreachable and had slid back into the roof. No abuse, no rough
handling.

Dealer repaired it under warranty.

The second time, I opened it perhaps 4-5 times since the first repair,
being especially careful. Next thing I know, it's off the tracks, and
plastic clip fragments are falling into my lap.

Dealer repaired it under warranty, again.

The second time, they replaced the "tracks" and not just the "clips."

Don't know if the new "tracks" had properly designed clips (doubt it)
but so far, there have been no issues.

These clips should be stamped steel, which would cost almost nothing
over using plastic clips.

If this issue was for a new BMW model, and they fixed the design the
following year, well, that would be reasonable.

But I did some searching on the Internet, and saw people complaining
of broken plastic sunroof shade clips from 1998 3-series!

Six years -- and the problem is still not fixed!

That's completely unacceptable.

The service rep told me if certain part of the car keeps breaking, BMW will keep replacing that part for free even after the warranty period is over. Is this correct?

This sounds too good to be true.
