Tail light issue

I had the tail light warning come on my '01 325i. I replaced all the bulbs and plugged everything in and nothing happened. I messed with the wires and then everything came on. The problem is that the brake light socket will not fit the 21/4 watt bulb. It will only fit the 21 watt bulb like the blinker socket uses. I looked at the lights I removed to see what BMW or the previous owner had in there and there was also a 21 watt bulb in that socket. I think this would contribute to the blinker blinking fast ever since I got the car over a year ago. I think the wire may have something to do with it or is it the bulb that doesn't fit well because it is not the right size? I am afraid I'm going to have to buy a new bulb holder because it definitely does not fit the right bulb. Any ideas??

I got the bulbs from Auto Zone. The bulb that is supposed to fit in the brake light socket (left bottom socket) does not fit. The only other one that fits is the 21 watt (blinker type bulb) and this is not the correct bulb.

I called my local BMW dealer and they stated the aftermarket bulbs (like at AutoZone) do not work correctly. I will go by there after work today and buy the bulbs from BMW. They said it's a common problem and they have to silver tipped.

In looking at the connector and wiring, it is obvious that the connector has gone bad. You can see where one of the prongs is completely burned. Some of the wires have gone bad. When I wiggle the wires, the bulbs turn on. BMW looked at it with me and noticed the same thing. They said they have seen a lot of this recently. The parts aren't expensive, but the labor is $95/hr! What a rip off. I will for now drive around with no left tail light, brake light, or blinker until I get the money to get it fixed!

sorry to hear that happened... my beamer eats tail light bulbs for lunch also... bulbs from the dealer are expensive, but they probably last longer? i try to buy generic ones as much as i can and stock a couple extras in case they burn out again

Yike, lets just hope you don't get a fix-it ticket.
