FRANKFURT (AFP) — German airline Lufthansa said Tuesday it was looking for a successor model to replace its fleet of Boeing 737 jets as well as a new model for its regional routes.
The German flag carrier plans to hold negotiations with both Boeing and its arch-rival Airbus but it is demanding technical modernizations compared with the existing planes, Lufthansa's head of purchasing Nico Buchholz told the Financial Times Deutschland in its Tuesday edition.
FT Deutschland said that, based on the catalogue price of the aircraft, the order could be worth about $3 billion (2.5 billion euros).
A Lufthansa spokesman described the figure as "pure speculation" and said that a final decision regarding the renewal of its Boeing 737 fleet had not yet been taken. Currently, Lufthansa uses 59 Boeing 737s on its short and medium-haul flights and its European fleet also includes 70 Airbus jets.
The group had originally planned to use Fairchild Dornier 728 jets on its regional routes, until the aircraft maker went bust.
I'll bet that the "technical modernizations" have something to do with pulling the plane's door handle twice to open it.
