Thumping Sound When My Car Comes to a Stop

Remember all my posts last yr about the clunking sounds from the rear/back of my car.

I have spent a few thousand changing amongst others the driveshafts, center bearing,subframe/axle bushes, trailing arm bushes, transmission mount, differential mount etc.

My car did become quieter but it only seemed to amplify the main annoying sound.....a thumping sound just before the car comes to a stop.

I have a 4 speed automatic.

Today I experimented when I drove on gear 3 and not D and guess what..........no more thump sound.

My question is what is wrong with my auto transmission?

Whats wrong with gear 4/D?

Does my auto transmission need an overhaul?

Could I have your feedback pls.....I dont think I can afford to drive on gear 3 all the while just to avoid the occasional thump.

Thanks guys!

the thump is probably it just switching gears back to first. There may be some additive that might help like tranny honey. My brother's 84 audi would only start out in 2nd no matter what. tranny honey cured it.

I know an automatic tranny guy and will see him tommorow. I'll try to remember to ask him. Probably won't be back on till monday though.

haha sliding sub. That would be funny, but it doesn't do it in 3rd.

if your tranny was dying, believe me you'd know it, man. talk about gear slippage. My first bimmer had a 4spd auto, and the tranny went. If your's is going, it's gonna slam into gear, maybe even miss one, no matter how nice you treat it. could be me though
