So the timing belt of my 1990 325i slipped. I thought it was broke, but the mechanic said he still saw the cam turning so it probably didn't do too much damage. He replaced the head, but then said that it also destroyed the distributor cap and rotor. He showed me the cracked cap. Is this possible / normal when a timing belt goes? Thanks in advance for info.

Replacing the HEAD?!? for a timing belt snapping?!?!

I have NEVER heard of that. As far as I know, AND I COULD BE WRONG, when a timing belt snaps, there really isn't much damage that happens unless the belt gets stuck in something, and then it's just $$ labor taking it out. I have never heard the timing belt effecting the top half of the motor to the point that it needed replacing.

I think the distributor cap could have been cracked before, but again, I don't see how it's connected, but I'm not an expert on this.

I get the feeling this guy is a rip-off.

Ok - first, BMW's use an interference engine design for better performance. However, if you are reluctant to perform the service interval inspections designated Inspection I and II - then you are going to kill the car. An interference engine simply means it breaths better by driving the valves into the combustion chamber much further than most engine types. This means if the car comes out of timing even a bit, (there is really no such thing as a slippage by the way), there is going to be HUGE damage. The head of the piston will contact the valve, which should have closed in time but didn’t; will be pulverized by the piston. Simple! You need a new head job - new valves, new guides, new rockers (because some of the will be snapped or fatigued now), new eccentrics on the rockers and you might want to have it milled too if it is warping a bit.

Sell the car to me... [clap]

I have a re-built head $550.00 on my 1987 325ic

Holy-hell,
Corect me if im wrong, but a timing belt breaking can do damage to the bottom end aswell, (hitting the tops of the pistons through to the crank) a broken timing belt shouldent have hurt the dizzy cap.
A timing belt "slipping" is possible (all the teeth getting ripped off on one side) but is quite rare.
Tell us what happens, and sorry to hear that.
