Tire question: any experience w/ Kumhos?

i'm doing two things i thought i'd never do with tires for my car.
1. going to a A/S set up.
2. buying cheaper rubber.

but as it stands, i'm thinking really hard about shipping my car to Korea, and due to circumstances, i need to get All Season tires made by a Korean manufacturer. (seeing as how import tires in that country are rediculous expensive. like $400+ for pilot sports at one site)

i'm looking hard at Kumho ECSTA ASX 18s $86/ $170 pairing (according to tirerack) doesn't seem too bad. any input, good or bad would be welcome.

also does anyone have any experience with hankook tires? thanks in advance

I have run Kumho ECSTA 712's (no longer being made) and ECSTA Sports on my roadster, 318is and other cars with no problems. They are considerably less expensive than comparable tires and I believe they are just as road worthy. I have also run Michelin Pilots Sports and Toyo Proxes. The Toyo's were bay far the best, but dollar for dollar the Kumho's held their own. The Pilots are over priced!

Also try Discount Tire at tires.com, they will drop ship and have great Kumho prices.

a lot of guys on the rx8 forum have the 18" kumos and like them better than the stock 18" lp bridgestone protenza's.. a couple guys i know got another brand made by bridgestone that they say grip like glue. i'm asking them and will post back when i find out what those are.

ok, found out that they're "Fuzion Zri" 245's in the 18"... does that ring any bells? i think i'm going to get those when my protenza's wear out, cuz i've heard great things about the fuzions.

I've ran Kumho's on my Z28 and really like them. Good wet & dry traction.

I recently made a switch from pilot sports to General Exclaim UHP's on my M. Though its not an apples to apples comparison, I like the UHP's more than the Kumho's.

Truthfully, I like the UHP's more than the OEM Pilot Sports my M came with.
[cheers]

BTW, I purchased the UHP's from tirerack.

I am going to be needing tires for the M real soon. I haven't even began looking though. I am currently running the ContiContact Sports. They are a very good tire as well, but I will probably go with something else when the time comes.....

Good luck with your search Jason....

Yo..Just got the Kumho ECSTA ASX 205/50/17 just installed last week.

I've driven 500 miles on it so far. I can honestly say that this isn't a bad tire. I like the thread on them.

I'm actually SURPRISED on the LOW tire noise from these set of 4 Kumho's .

For the price, I'll buy them again. However, it is important to note that I've only had them for about 500miles.

Scott thanks for the suppor and Kenny and Perry, thanks for the inputs.

500 miles, must've just broken them in huh? hopefully the low noise lasts even with tread wear. ASX is just what i'm looking at. (and thanks to the another post here, i found out 2001 CI has 205/50 tires.. Kenny, do you know the width of your rims? are they 17 x 7.0 or17 x 7.5 just curious..)

Jae,

I've definitely broke them in. It's snowed here in Cleveland this past week and they handled petty good. I'll buy them again if i need tires.

You got me here bro..

I think it's simply 17 x 7.0. I think I'm right because both my fronts and backs are the same size.

Take a look at the general exclaim uhp's. I enjoy driving my car much more now than when I had the OEM pilot sports.

Kenny, thanks for the confirmation.
ASXs are pretty good eh? maybe i should get them installed ASAP.. i'm running short on time..

living in Michigan, I'm getting sick of waiting till like May to shelf my snow shoes. not to mention checking out weather.com in Oct, to make sure i get my snows on at the right time. only to have near 70 degree weather sneak up on me, keeping me off hte freeways in fear of melting my treads right off.. *sigh
