I've asked that question to a dealer and an independent mechanic. They both told me it's more expensive than putting in a new tranmission ($4,000).

yes it can be done, and yes its very expensive, esp on a newer car. I would recommend selling the car and buying a manual.

Yup, it's generally much more cost effective to just sell your car and buy one with the tranny you want.

Anything is possible. It's just a matter of how much money you wanna throw at it. For example, I believe Kobe Bryant's Lamborghini Murcielago is an automatic. Was a stick shift, but is now modified into an auto. For his wife.
