2000 323i will not go into reverse but when put into drive the car runs fine. Every BMW dealership wants to replace the transmission for a grand total of $3,500. What should i do? I have been driving the car and simply putting it into neutral and pushing the car backwards as needed. I have talked to a couple transmission shops that are not BMW dealerships and they advise me that it may be as simple as a computer glitch or a servo problem. PLEASE HELP what should i do???? thanks allot ............................ And by the way i will never by an automatic BMW again.

Yeah dude, it sucks. I didn't have problems with my reverse on my 99 328, but I started to have various gears slip...or the car would get the bright idea to downshift when it wasn't necessary and when I'd restart the car it would be fine, then not again. Auto trannies can start to act really wierd when they start to go.

You can find guys that will do bench work on auto's....but it can be shady. I finally got a new GM factory refurb tranmission installed by BMW this summer. It was very $$$. But they don't last forever and they all go out at some point.

I agree on getting an auto. I was back and forth on a stick or not....being stuck in traffic it would suck to have a stick, but fun driving it's the best. Most important...at this point we would have been replacing the clutch...not a $3,500 black box.
