Trasmission Issue

I have a 2002 330 convertible with a transmission issue. Recently, I have noticed that when in drive (“D”) and coming to a stop, the transmission will downshift, causing a slight "hitch" when slowing down. This does not occur if the transmission is in "DS" mode. I don't recall this occurring before, meaning that the condition only came on after approximately 8000 miles. Is this normal operation or something for BMW to look into? Any advice would be appreciated.

I had that happen to me ever since the car was new (200 miles). I seems to be more noticable when the car haven't warm up yet. I took it to the dealer and they gave me a computer fix for hard downshift. It is a little better now but noticable sometimes.

I hope this is not related to the sliptronic problem....

don't auto trannys down shift during the braking esp when coming to a stop? known as engine braking?

maybe the tranny is getting a bit sloppy, not syncing w/ the engine revs when down shifting, causing the slight "hitch". when in manual shift mode, do you downshift when braking to a stop or just let it stop until the car comes to a stop? (thus going from your top gear into neutral, and since it's not downshifting, you wont' feel a hitch)

if it's something slightly annoying, i'd leave it as it is.. having techs poke around to cure a small annoyance may lead to a major problem later.. (sure i'd inqure about it, but if they aren't too sure, i wouldn't have them poke around)

My 2003 wagon did the exact same thing at about the same mileage--there is a fix for the transmission computer that can be programed by the dealer at no-charge to you.

Had the same thing. It IS a software fix. They pull the "computer" that controls the tranny and send it in (tho some people have said it was done in house, mine went to NJ) for a software upgrade. The ticket on the job said "BMW Technical Assistance reprogrammed E.G.S control unit"
