Trunk Release?

I have a 2000 323i sedan and I can't find a trunk release button, knob, or lever at all anywhere in the car. The only way I am able to pop open the trunk is using the push button on the key itself. This is a tad annoying considering I always have to turn off my engine and remove the key to pop the trunk. Anyone know where this handy little button is or if I even have it (might be some type of security feature)? I've looked everywhere..even checked the manual without success.. thanks!!

correct-a-mundo, Vlad...

I just checked the owners manual for my '03 325i and it shows

the lever [or button] on the left side of the drivers 'footwell' area...

The 'button' should be above the brake release and have the outline of a 3 series sedan.

Weird.. I don't have that button there at all. It's just blank, I checked the manual too and see what you guys are talking about but there's just black plastic (no button) *shrug*. I'll try and take a pic when I get a chance, maybe I'm still looking in the wrong spot.. thanks guys!

never even bothered to look for the trunk release inside the car.

if i'm totally off topic, oops [:)]

There is no actual button to release the trunk. All you have to do is unlock your doors, with your "lock/unlock button" on your center console and that should do the trick. [:)]

My '04 Ci has a release inside the car just as vlad described above. So it can be unlatched any of three ways. Pressing the inside release, pressing the latch release between the license plate lights, or with the remote.

As Tweet mentioned, the release between the license plate lights will only work if the car is unlocked with the button on the console or the remote.

BMWROCKS: I don't belive on the '00s there was the little button that Vlad was referring to.

Gr8ful: The little button that vlad is referring to doesn't actually "pop open" our trunks it only unlocks them. Since your car doesn't have the separate button, once you unlock your doors, (I believe you actually press the unlock button one more time after all of the doors are unlocked) your trunk will be unlocked. Then you can go and using the button between the license plate lights open your trunk manually. This is the only way you can unlock your trunk without the key.

My dad has an '02 330 cic and he doesn't have the button either, and that is what he does. I am not sure if he had to get it programmed to do that, but I will ask him. The button on his center console does the following:
1st time: drivers door unlocks
2nd time: passengers door unlocks
3rd time: trunk unlocks
4th time: doors & trunk lock

Try it and let us know if it works.

Thanks Tweet227,

Point is that I should not have to hit a button more than once to open the trunk when the engine is running. Say when I am loading the car or picking up frnds when its running, I shouldn't have to hit a button more than once or shut the car off to open the trunk....

Just complaining

Who would ever think that something as simple as opening your trunk, BMW could manage to make so difficult!!!!

Just for the record, mine "pops open" when I hit the little button above the hood release (vlads button).

And Tweets dad's center console button would piss me off if it was mine. That's too many damn presses to unlock the trunk. Mine does the following (assuming auto-locked at 10 mph):

First press: unlocks driver, passenger, trunk.
Second press: locks everything but fuel door.

BTW the fuel door is locked only when car is locked from the outside (key fob or door). This is so you can be in the car with the doors locked and your gas-filling-station-slave can put gas in it without you worrying about him breaking in the car and killing you.

I find something funny. I have my trunk locked by the key so it can only open by physically using the key or pressing the trunk unlock button on the key. When the car is on and i want to open the trunk i can only seem to do it by turning off the car and pressing the unlock button. With the key in the ignition pressing the unlock button on the key doesn't work. Anyone run into this problem or a way around it? I would like to be able to open the trunk sometimes without having to turn the car off! (but still want to keep it locked manually)

Either I have to use the button (showing a trunk hood) down by the lever that opens the hood..........or turn off the car to unlock with the key button.......if you think about it, you don't want you're trunk opening while you're driving is why the car has to be turned off.....you could accidently hit the unlock button while driving......but hey I got a button inside the car......[rofl] [rofl]

i have the button in the car too but it doesn't seem to open it when the trunk is closed in that particular way. it's because if you lock it and give it to the valet then they can't get in i suppose. so the only other way is with the key button but the car has to be off.

This is taken from the '04 330/325Ci owners manual on how the valet feature works:

"Turn the master key to the right past the resistance point and then pull it out in the horizontal position. This locks the luggage compartment lid and disconnects it from the central locking system. This feature can be used to prevent unauthorized access to the luggage compartment when you surrender the spare key only. This can be advantageous for valet parking, for example."

The spare key is the little plastic one that came with the car that you are supposed to keep in your wallet or purse for emergencies.

hmmmmmmmm I got a real metal valet key, no plastic one.[???1] I leave the valet key in the car so I have it readily available for when I valet.....[rofl] [rofl]

I guess the key is different for different models even within a series.....I got a metal one like yours with my X5.....but you still have to do the master key trick in the trunk keyhole or else the valet will be able to open the trunk using the vlad switch.

The valet key does not fit the trunk or the glove box, so as long as you lock the trunk and glove box with the master key using the keyholes you are good to valet.[thumb]

With my 330d it's always possible to open the trunk from the outside unless I centerlock it or do the valet-key-trick... European BMW's don't have the 'as soon as you start driving everything locks' mode installed. As far as I know only the American cars need that. That might be a reason why you have to go through pains with some of you guy's cars to open the damn trunk (but I agree, BMW should just give all the American products a button.......)
