I would like to go turbo with my little wonder and was wondering what the law stated as far as compression ratio's were concerned with these motors. I have Garret T4 doing the force induction and wondered if I could keep the current pistons in place boosting 0.8 bar until such time as I can affort the new pistons, also I believe that the E36 325i pistons could be sufficient for the setup. true false I don't know?

What CR does the 325i run stock?? 9.something : 1??

Things like EVO 3's run 9.0:1 stock, but being a turbo motor to start with it is prolly built stronger.

B16a civic's run turbo's happily on stock internals provided you stay below 0.5bar and they have a 10.5:1 CR.

Can you get different thickness head gaskets for the M20??
You could source a thicker one to lower the CR.

It is always a bit unkown how a NA engine will handle FI, Some don't mind at all & others spit the dumby (ie blow-up)
