Any word on wether there will be a retro-fit part enabling both Bluetooth and BMW Assist?

I thought BMW was going to have a solution in September. :)

Oh yeah... e46 330xi 2004.

I think BMW has announced that BlueTooth is now available on cars with Assist. I wonder if there is a way to get our Assist modules to be now compatible with BT now that they can now offer both on the 2005's?

I have just Purchased a New 5 Series 530D SE Touring, I imported the car from Germany to the UK. Consequently I had no direct source other than BMW-UK Customer Care to advice me on any of my problems, I did however find out that BMW Assist is available on the 5 Series, I am taking the car into my local dealer next week to have a retrofit.BMw are sending a technichian from their factory to fit it. My main point is go through your BMW Customer Care, who will be glad to help you.
My retrofit is costing me GBP 150.00,the Subscription are approx GBP 200 per year. You need to have I beleive the Sat Nav Pro,and the BMW fixed phone.
Hope this helps!

This is what I read on my Owners Circle

BMW ANNOUNCES BLUETOOTH AVAILABILITY FOR THE 2005 MODEL YEAR

October 28th, 2004, Woodcliff Lake, NJ… Today BMW offered its second major in-car communication/entertainment initiative for the 2005 model year. Following its announcement about the availability of Sirius satellite radio as a factory-installed option, BMW announced the availability of Bluetooth for nearly all 2005 model BMWs, providing a new standard of convenience for in-car hands-free calling.

What is Bluetooth?
Bluetooth provides a wireless connection between select compatible cell phones and the vehicle for hands-free calling. With a compatible Bluetooth cell phone drivers can place calls, answer calls and select numbers from the phonebook by simply using the multi-function steering wheel or dashboard controls.

How does it work?
Bluetooth equipped vehicles are shipped fully activated, requiring no further activation or installation. All that is required is a compatible Bluetooth phone. The owner must complete an initial pairing procedure in order to create a private wireless connection between phone and vehicle. This is only required once, all subsequent connections occur automatically. Up to four pairings may be held in memory.

Which vehicles come with Bluetooth?
Bluetooth is standard equipment on the 2005 5 and 6 Series models as well as the M3 Convertible and X5 4.8is. It is included in all other vehicles equipped with BMW Assist or a Premium Package. It is not offered on the 7 Series, which comes standard with a fully integrated portable cell phone. Some early production 2005 model 3 Series cars are not equipped with Bluetooth. Consult a BMW center for specific availability.

Which phones are compatible?
In order to ensure a high degree of customer satisfaction BMW tests all available Bluetooth phones on the market. Only after a phone passes a variety of compatibility tests is it approved. Therefore not all available Bluetooth phones are compatible with BMW’s Bluetooth option. BMW centers will have a complete list of all approved phones for every major cellular service provider.

My 2005 330ci comes from the factory with Assist and Bluetooth (included as no charge default option with Assist). I havne't actually dug through my trunk, but I assume this means that a module is available that lets both work together.

Gotta love how BMW screwed over the '04 owners when it comes to BT. Here's the response I got to my email this morning about whether or not they are working on a retrofit for the '04 verts. Looks like I'll be yanking the assist module and looking for a different manufacturer on my next car. I don't like having to mod my car in this way, but they just have no interest in providing a plug in for both units. Though I like the idea of an automatic call in case of an accident, I will get more benefit from being able to use my phone hands-free without a headset. The only thing that I don't like is that I'm going to have that stupid SOS on my mirror and it will be useless.

Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding Bluetooth phones for the 2004 BMW 3 Series Convertible. Please accept my apologies for the misunderstanding. At this time, BMW does not have plans to produce a retrofit kit for the Bluetooth phone for the 2004 model year 3 Series Convertible.

The Motorola CPT 9000 is the phone which is compatible with the integrated system in the 2004 3 Series Convertible. If you would like further details on this phone or would like to purchase the phone, please contact the parts department at your authorized BMW center. The parts department can provide you information on required hardware and pricing. Should you need it, you will find a complete listing of authorized BMW centers, categorized by name, state or zip code, on our website at www.bmwusa.com.

If you have any further questions, please respond to this e-mail or contact the Customer Relations and Services Department at 1-800-831-1117, Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., Eastern Standard Time.

I called BMW customer service yesterday regarding bluetooth and after researching it and calling me back, they said that it can be done, but I would lose assist. They did not say that they won't do it or that it will void warranty.

Does anybody have the bluetooth now? I'm curious how well it works in the vert. w/o nav. and is it worth it? I was thinking about buying the parts from circle or pacific bmw and taking them to my dealer. (Unless they price match).

It can be done and won't void the warranty because they are OEM BMW parts. They just won't do it for you because it removes thier revenue generator. I have heard the rumblings that there may be another reason regarding the FCC, but that makes no sense since all other models, including the 05's can have both. I guess it's possible that something in the Assist unit causes a problem, but I have no idea what that may be.

I bought parts from the dealer and dropped my car off to have the work done -- fully aware I'd lose "assist". They waited until the end of the day to give me a call letting me know that they couldn't do the work afterall, because the option is not supported in '04 Convertibles. They promptly refunded my money for the bluetooth kit.

I'm just going to have to go re-purchase the kit, find some great instructions, and take it someplace to have it installed. I guarantee you your dealer will not do the install for you on an '04 Convertible. Even if they say "yes" on the phone.

In answer to some of your questions...

I did have Assist deactivated, and the module removed. The BT module fits in the exact same space as the Assist module, so in order for a rerofit to work, a new bracket must be created by BMW (to hold 2 modules instead of one), and a "Y" adatpter of some sort... or BMW would have to come out with a combo BT/Assist module (integrated), and the sotware on the '04 e46 would have to be smart enough to deal with the combo module.

All of this is moot though. I sent a "priority email" to BMWUSA, and asked about the status of the promised retrofit... not surprisingly the respinse I got was "we will never support Assist and BT on pre05 models of the e46".

I'm bummed.

They would have to create a combo module because they also use the same wiring as well.

We are a law firm in NJ planning on bringing a class action lawsuit against BMW regarding the blue tooth issue on the 2004 models. If you are interested in being the class representative, please send me an e-mail. you must have a 2004 MY BMW with BMW assist and want the bluetooth technology.

Thanks.
