I have the stock alpine in my 325 wagon. Can I upgrade to the H/K system (through ebay purchase) and add the subwoofer, amp and speakers? Seems worth it for $200 or less. Can I simply...plug it in?

You can, but I wouldn't bother with the stock H/K speakers IMHO. Spend a little more and look for aftermarket speakers that match up in size. You'll get a lot more for your money. Then you'll know why everyone's selling those stock H/K speakers on ebay....Just my opinion, but then again, I've heard good stock H/K systems and a lot of really bad ones too.

if you're gonna get a custom stereo, get a custom stereo!! you're gonna be doing the same amount of work (or probably more, just to get it stock?) then you might as well get some better stuff than what the factory offers. and with that wagon, you can really make it rock!

Don't want to get too fancy with a leased car. The simpler the better, but I need a little more base, maybe replace some of the speakers with better quality. I like the look of the head unit and the steering wheel control-ablility of the stock setup.

Next time, I'll buy. [:(]

The HK sub and amp will make it sound better, if you just want it to sound better. I guess that's your best bet if you want to keeping everthing with the stock set up. But if your looking for great sound from your stock setup as the foundation, your not likely gonna get it. You could always run your factory deck to a line out to a better amp(better meaning Alpine, RF, Soundstream, etc etc, not BMW) and then run upgraded speakers and sub from that amp but if you want to go custom go full custom like jjjjjjj said. Hope this helps, keep us posted on what you do.

where could I get the specs on the speaker sizes etc. I have the hk system and it sounds decent on some things but the bass can be boomy. I was thinking of just upgrading some of the speakers w/o changing the amp etc. Maybe some MB Quart speakers if I could find the right size.

hey jbfrog,
go to www.crutchfield.com and put in your car year and model and it will tell you the stock speaker sizes for your car. It also tells you which good aftermarket ones will fit your ride without cutting extra holes. helpful site, hope this helps you.
