Vanos solenoid

I don't know if anyone can answer this series of questions...

Does the m42 4 cyl motor have a vanos solenoid?
Where (approximately) is it located?
How can you tell if it needs replacement?

This sounds like it's out of nowhere, but there's a reason you're asking. What's the problem? Do you think there is a problem with your VANOS? (Rattling or something?... not your chain guide or chain tensioner?) I don't know if there is a VANOS solenoid.... I'm really of no help.

I think the M42/M44 started using VANOS in 1995, did it not?
