I was told that my starting prob with the car is my vehicle anti theft and ECM, so do I just replace the ECM or is there a way to fix without replacing? This car cranks but does not fire. Has power at the fuel pump relay but not at the fuel pump fuse. Doesn't appear to have spark at coil but power to coil. This car had the pulse generator pulse sensors replaced.

I DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO BESIDES REPLACE THE ECM AND HOPE IT FIXES THE PROBLEM WITH THE ANTI THEFT AND STARTING. Joe [chair]

I don't know what anti-theft device you are talking about. These cars didn't have an ignition mobilizer anti-theft system from the factory like the newer cars do. Does yours have an aftermarket alarm?

The code the mechanic got said something about vehicle security system prob? He used a snap on scan tool from what he told me. I have no clue about it either? I had heard that the vehicle had a factory and an aftermarket alarm ystem. I cut out the aftermarket alarm system and the vehicle still ran for another 5 months before just shutin down. I just wanted to find another ecm and switch it out unless the factory anti theft is outside of the ecm. You know? Joe

I don't know what year they started it - but my 1988 325is (build 10/87) had the dealer options book that had stuff like floor mats - it also had a cd changer and anti theft alarm.
bmwjc3 you sure he doesn't mean RADIO code?

I'm sure it wasn't a radio code because I have an aftermarket Pioneer stereo system in the car. I have been doing alot of reading in the tech manual my girl picked up from Bav Auto. It is starting to sound like an ignition problem. Joe

bmwjc3,
I don't know if this will help you but I've just completed some work for a friend with a 95 325I. Her car will not start if you unlock the car by way of the drivers door. If you unlock the car through the passenger door or the trunk, the car starts just fine. I have a code reader and there is a code in the memory about the anti-theft module. I haven't had the chance to look at the module yet as she wanted to drive her car. Mark

What is ECM? Are you talking about your OBC (on board computer) antitheft system. What you do is when you turn the car off to position 1 or 0 you can input a 4 digit code that is required the next time you want ot start your car. That way next time you want to turn the car on you have to input the code to start the ignition.
