venice:padua commute?

planning a ED and trip to florence and venice.a co worker recommends commuting to venice by train (1/2 hr) to venice for the day or day and half I will be there.safer parking,cheaper,nice town. has anyone done this? how did it work out.

has anyone taken the "club" with them ?

is florence safe for cars?

I Can't give any advice on the Venice/Padua idea, but I asked a number of questions like this on Fodors.com . Follow the links to Talk->Europe . There are a ton of regular world travelers on there, and many of them seem very knowlegeable about Italy.
