I just noticed on the rear headrests they have a label about roll over protection. A quick Google search found this.
Hidden defences.
Roll-over protection.
The 3 Series Convertible offers a highly elegant solution to roll-over protection. The windscreen frame is designed to provide protection in the event of a roll-over. In addition, the roll-over bars concealed in the rear seats ensure sufficient clearance for passengers' heads in the event of an accident. They are triggered within milliseconds if the highly responsive sensors detect a critical situation.
In the picture, they look pretty small, as in if you are very tall, your head will still scrape in a roll over. Does anyone know how tall they are? or do the A pillers also have more support so the front end doesn't cave in in the event of a roll over?
here is the picture/description.

I assume the E46 models will be generally the same, not just the 2004 model like this one refers too.
