Hi,
My car is having a hard time quitting smoking. She's been off road for about 10 months sitting stationary on my driveway in crap weather.

I got her started the other day and she blows (to my horror) a white steam. (Although I was thinking about an LPG conversion, I did not have steam power in mind...) and no it's not a head gasket problem, can't see any evidence of that.

I can only think that moisture has got into the cat or the exhaust system, which admittedly I had patched up with aluminium paste to get it through its MOT last time round. so possibly there is a hole somewhere, or something in the paste is reacting with the exhaust gasses.

When she heats up after about 30 mins of sitting on the driveway drinking petrol and annoying the neighbours, the smoke seems to disappear.

I guess it doesn't really bother me that much, just that I get funny looks from the people in the village when I drive through town and I'm tired of having to take the long way around to avoid driving past the police station with a cloud of white stuff billowing from my exhaust... And I'm too tight to buy a replacement exhaust (do you have any idea how much these cost!!!?)

Any advice gratefully received! :)
Keep it cheap and cheerful please!

Cheers!,

Moisture in only the exhaust system won't cause that much steam. I'm afraid you do have a head gasket leak or crack in a cylinder wall. A compression test is the best way to find out, but watching the coolant level will give you a clue.

Are you sure its steam?

Did you drain the fuel tank and put fress fuel into it before you fired the car up from sitting? Maybe water in the fuel? I dont think a head gasket would go back after just sitting. Is your car loosing coolant?

Maybe water in the fuel, or the fuel is old and crappy. If water was in the fuel it would missfire or pop sometimes though.
