Wait another year or two and it'll get REALLY bad. BMW's leather doesn't wear well. Some dealers are cool about it, but others claim it's abnormal wear and tear and won't fix it.

On my '98 328 the leather started to wear so thin that there was literally a hole in it (drivers seat). I brought it into the dealership and they put this liquid patch like stuff on it (same color as my leather). It patched the hole and looked as good as new. Couldn't ever tell there was a problem, never happened again. [:)]

I would take it back - that suprises me. Every Bimmer I have owned (all with leather) has worn very well. My 97 528i w/ 122K mi hardly shows any wear.

I believe that the 5 and 7 series cars come with a higher quality leather than the 3 series. I have heard the same from several 5 and 7 series owners, and abdoman's comment would seem to confirm this. I would definitely try to get the dealer to fix it for free. I know from personal experience that they do good work. (I punched a hole in my back seat moving a television, and they repaired it. It looks brand new now.)

Possibly, my experiences with BMWs crappy leather have all been with 3 series or their derivatives (M coupe in particular). I should take a peek at how the leather's doing in my neighbor's 7 series.

Next time you have service performed just chalk it up with your Technician. And my advice for future visits; never ask if something is covered under warranty. Assume that it is and ask for it to be taken care of. In many cases by asking, you're just offering them an excuse to give to you. Obviously some people beat their cars beyond repair from the moment they sign their papers, but if your car is relatively new and you know you've not been abnormally rough with your leather, don't hesitate to ask your dealer to fix it.
