Weird noise

Hi guys..

My car is making a strange noise. It's a loud rattling noise that only exists when the car is idling. However, once I push the clutch in, it stops. Has anyone else had this problem before? If so, what is it?

Thanks,
Felicia

Definitely the throwout bearing!!! It's NOTHING inside the transmission becuase you probably get the sound even when not moving.

1. Bad/faulty throwout bearing installed
2. Unbalanced clutch which = bad throwout bearing
3. Improperly installed throwout bearing.

It's an annoying sound and if you shut the engine off with the clutch out, it sounds like an old diesel engine. I know how annoying it is!! This summer I plan on replacing it myself (not worth taking my 16 year old car to someone to get it fixed), but take it to the dealer. It probably wont fail or anything, but it's not a good thing at all.

Oh, it can fail. Mine failed after while of making noise with the clutch pedal pressed in. Took the clutch release arm and pressure plate with it when it went. The throwout bearing was in three pieces when it was removed from the car.

It could very well be the throwout bearing, but it could also be a transmission bearing. When you are not moving, have the clutch pedal released and the transmission in neutral, the input shaft and idler shaft are still rotating at engine speed. When you push in the clutch pedal to disengage the clutch, the input shaft is disconnected from the engine and will stop turning.

It could be either the throwout bearing or a transmission bearing.

True but if it were the transmission bearing, it wouldnt stop making noise the very second the clutch pedal is pressed down.

Take it to the dealer... remember, this is part of what makes your car do its job -- MOVE.

I agree, it's most likely the throwout bearing. Just keeping the possibility of a tranny bearing open. At leas the throwout bearing will be easier for them to fix. It would be nice if they would put a new clutch in while they had it apart, but I'm sure they won't, unless it's damaged.

Since it's under warranty, and it'll be fixed under warranty, the chances are VERRRRRRY slim that they'll replace it. Though, if he knows someone personally at the dealer, that might help [;)]

Thanks for all of the responses guys. It'll be going to the dealer next week once I get back from my business trip. My car is only 2 months old so I'm kind of pissed off about this. I'm actually really good personal friends with the service manager at my dealership so I'll be looking to have the part replaced.

Well, you guys are good! My car is at the dealership now with a bad throwout bearing. I asked for a new clutch but of course I'm not getting one. So I told my friend you better hope that I don't come back in here with another clutch problem.
