They continue to rotate round and round wearing tread off! However to answer your question better they do not have much traction in the rain or snow and can thus cause a loss of control. If you live in a state that has mild winters, like here in the Seattle area and do not drive out of the area they are fine. I prefer an all season high performance tire, however even that is not as good as a dedicated tire. Get a set for each summer and winter!

keep in mind i got stuck in an inch of snow on a flat driveway in my summer tires. also think about the fact that the compound performance tires are made of don't like cold either, you can certainly get around, but they get hard below 50 degrees.

^ That is why you don't drive with your winter tires on after it gets above 50 degrees, otherwise you will find yourself on a hard shoulder or dead.

i have to keep my winter tires on for a while because i live in the mountains, and i regularly fly up to the ski hill in 60 degree weather at about 90mph. when i get to the top i realize that the 16 miles i just drove probably took off over a 1000mies of tread on my tires.

the leason: get two sets

I got caught with my summer tires on in a snowfall once. Goodyear Eagle F1 Gs D2's... Incredible tire! Then it snowed, I couldn't stop, go, or turn. The car became undriveable.
This is a very aggressive tread pattern, some summer tires are bearable in a wintery situation.
