by moving the shifter over to M/S you put the car into Drive Sport mode, which makes upshifts later, and down shifts earlier.

By moving the lever forward or backward once in Drive Sport puts it into manual mode. Now you select the gear you want moving the lever, it will downshift automatically at a complete stop.

frolf is right on the money (as if he didn't already know). Obviously he has a steptronic or has had one in the past or has driven a BMW with one. And it does stand for "Manual/Sport".....

And in M mode it will shift even if you forget to, somewhere around the red line. Ain't technology somethin'???

Actually it's more fun to downshift yourself before stopping and feel the tranny slow the car.... Also if you leave it in manual mode it usually shifts by itself at 5-5500 rpm.

All true, and.... if you forget to downshift coming to a stop, it will downshift you to 2nd... not first... believe this is to help those take-offs in the snow... (less tire spin)

I don't understand why anybody starts from second gear (be it auto or manual transmission). Starting from 2nd gear puts more stress on the transmission...yes, 1st gear is really damn short, but that's the whole point. Gear 1 is supposed to be a pickup gear, just to get the car moving and I really don't like it when auto transmissions start from 2nd for snow driving. Even when I drove my Jetta through the snow (my G35C has the wrong tires for the snow), I would always start from 1st gear....it just felt more natural.

Hello, and welcome! [wave]
Two suggestions;
1. Read the owners manual
2. Read the thread on this on this board re: Sliptronic. Starts with "It's Baack"
Be safe, have fun, and pray you don't have the sliptronic. [pray] [cheers]

2nd gear starts shouldn't put too much stress on the gears, unless you are looking for a fast launch. the first gear does just that, and from some articles that i read, in the higher perf cars, first gears are good for the really hard pull to get the car moving. most leisure street starts can be done on the second. (altho it does feel underpowered if yer anywehre near uphill..)

in the snow, the 2nd gear is used so you put less torque down to the slippery pavement. or so the logic goes, whether you use the first or the second to launch on the snow, as long as you dun start spinning the wheels, that's what's important.

didn't anyone have one of those 70's chevy pickups with a 4 spd. that had a "granny low"? would never use it unless towing/hill climbing, it was not needed. Same with the steptronic in manual, doesn't go to 1st unless you tell it to, don't need it. (sure does accelerate slow but minimizes wheel spin)...
