What Is The Sign Of Transmission Mount Failure?

I have been trying to solve an annoying knocking noise from the rear of my 15 yr old E30 318i Auto since I bought the car 3 mths back.

I have todate changed the driveshaft, center bearing, trailing arm bushes and rear axle bushes.

My car is much quieter now but the knocking noise remains.....it seems to happen when I slow down or suddenly take my foot off the accelarator.

My next project is the Transmission @ Motor Mount/Tranny bushes?

Any advise?

Have you checked the rear shock mounts? They have a habit of making noise when they've bit the dust. If that is the case you can upgrade using e30 convertble mounts, E36 or E46 mounts. They are all a direct replacement and last longer than the original stock ones without spending the money for billet ones.

Thanks, I'll have alook at the shock mounts at my next service.

However my readind reveals that worn shock mounts show in knocking sound when you go over bumps/uneven road.

I dont have that problem......its more of a thump or knock when I slow down and step off the accelarator. There seems to be a knock then but when i drive and press the accelarator no sound, its just a bit annoying.

I guess i got to learn to live with it.....after all its a 15 yr old car.

Thanks again.
