My yellow oil light is coming on on my 330cic. I do not want to go to the dealer -- I can put oil in myself. What kind/viscosity should I buy? Thanks!

You can try castrol 5w 30 synthetic oil too.... so long as it's mobile 1, castrol, or redline it's ok... anything else is garbage.

What about Royal Purple and Amsoil? Both very good brands.

I agree with bmwrocks, those brands are fine also.

FWIW, BMW appears to be currently co-marketing with Castrol, and I believe that the BMW labeled stuff at the dealer is Castrol product.

If you're just topping it off, you can just buy the BMW stuff. Around here, for some reason, I can find it cheaper than Mobile 1. Plus, you're not mixing oils (dunno if that even makes a difference tho).

Quick related question... the other day I topped off with NON-synthetic Mobil 5W-30. I was thinking that I'll be changing my oil in about a month, I had this on-hand, and I didn't want to drive any more than I had to when the engine was a quart low. That's no problem, right? Again, I'll be doing a complete oil change in about a month.

All synthetic oils are compatable with dino oils, you will have no problems. In the late 90's BMW switched from Mobil 1 to Castrol Synthetic, why? I am sure it was marketing. I suggest any synthetic oil is better than Dino oil, however I use Dino in my pickup, 145k on her and still ticking......

Yeah I think you're fine. Synthetic oil is compatible with non. And since you'll be changing it in a month, you don't have to worry about the non-synthetic breaking down before the usually long interval changes. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Has anybody seen these new Mobil One oils that have come out? Good grief...does the oil industry have to change everything every 2 years?

i go with 0W 40. synthetic of course. that is what the dealer puts in it so i stick with it.

in terms of mixing differnet oils, it is correct it is not the big problem to mix synthetic with non-synthetic. just makre you have the same viscosity. don´t mix 0w40 with 5w40 for example.

[bmwdance] I'm going with Royal Purple. I found a place in Kalamazoo MI that will ship it at $66 per case(about $5.56 per quart) and ship it for free! Royal Purple products are awesome!
