I'm writing this because I've been a BMW owner for two months now, and I have been getting

negative feedback from non BMW drivers, and those who know what I drive. Any advice on

how to deal with BMW haters.

What types of negative feedback are you getting?

I've always received good feedback from friends and occasionally I would even meet total strangers in the parking lot asking about my car.

dude i hate it. i dont really say anything. the worst of them are the mercedes lovers, and the stick shift haters, which tend to be the same people for obvious reasons.

then theres the ricers
thers this one guy who sits next to me in history right, hates bmw loves toyota. he saw teh fast and the furious and popped a bonor or somthing. anyways his rich ass parents bought him a celica at 16. riced it up, crashed it. and when i say riced i mean bone stock + stickers parkbench and coffe can. then his parents bought him a supra. and i thiknk he crashed it but he still talks about fiixing it or somthing. all day hes talks technical im gonna get some blow off valves blah blah blah. and im thinking u retard, u dont got the TT, u have the regular 3.2, and u know why, bc u only drive automatic, which the TT wont come in, so what are u gonna do with BOV.

but i just keep my mouth shut. its the best way. smokin em works pretty damn good too.

Same here (with tom.)

I've had 2 or 3 people ask me about what the "is" means. Though it seems like most people on the road cant stand it if i pass them or something -- they seem like they feel belittled by being passed by a bmw, so they feel they have to try to show who's better. Personally, I really dont care.

One thing I hate is how I feel 'shy' when people ask me what I drive -- some people seem to have a negative reaction. Sadly, the people I get along with most when it comes to talking about cars -- are all the RWD car owners at school (including 80's comaro's -- i hate the cars but they are part of the 'rwd club' we unofficially have...)

Anyways, who cars what people think? If they own a chevy, and dont like your car, why should YOU feel bad? They'll end up buying a second $25k car becuase it will fall apart before you get rid of your $40k car. You're the one who made the better decision.

Amen to that comment about the chevys!

I think BMW has done a good job making their products appeal to younger consumers. I certainly see more 20 year olds in bimmers than I do 20 year olds in Mercedes. So in that respect people in my generation have respect for bmw, at least thats how I see it.

I love getting the thumbs up from random bimmer drivers I see on the road.

I feel shy when people ask what I drive too, don't know why because when people I know find out what I drive they act positively towards the bimmer. Once I was getting front wheel allignment and the mechanic gave me such an attitude, what's his problem? Probably because I'm younger than him and drive a BMW and not an old Buick that he does and he felt like I need him or something. Oh, I always give BMW drivers the thumbs up if I can(well, actually only one thumb up because the other hand is on the wheel and I can't really drive like Clive Owen in Star), except when the BMW is riced out. I remember when I was driving the bimmer home from the dealer with the 30 day plates and this guy in a cadillac gave me the thumbs up and I felt SOOOO GOOD, you can't believe it.

When i first got my car...i was a bit insecure because I'm kinda young and I figured that everyone was looking at me thinking..."his parents bought him a BMW" But F--k 'em, I know i earned every darn bit and this is honestly the ONLY car i enjoyed driving and really love the body style! Now, I dont give a sh-t...the ricers only wish they could drive a REAL car!

I sometimes get negative comments until they get in the car and I drive it. Then it's "WOW, this kicks ass" and "it's definately worth every penny". I just like the jack ass Honda people that think their car is ssssssssoooooooo great. Then I usually follow up with "meet me at the drag strip and we'll see how F***ing great your shit is". Then after I beat them in the quarter mile I say "how does it feel to own a piece of shit and to get beat by a chick". Amazingly they never have anything to say. All I can say is my Bimmer is Bitch Powered!!!!!!! [bmwkick]
Oh and of coarse I can always follow up with "what can I can I say........I have expensive taste and well from what I can see you're just cheap"!!!!!

I have also only received positive feedback on my Bimmer. When filled up the tank for the first time fifteen minutes after I bought it a guy at the gas station told me “that’s a really nice car.” One time I raced an Evolution and after I beat him, he pulled up next to me rolled his window down and said “that’s a fast car, no one has ever beaten me before” and I told him “thanks, it’s the ultimate.” I have to admit he was very cool for a ricer who had just gotten beat, but he gained my respect because he didn’t try to make up excuses. He said his next car is going to be an M3.

I like BMW’s because they give the car enthusiast a great car with just enough room to improve it for the “I know there’s more power in here, I just have to find it” crowd. Besides I only care about the opinion of those people that I respect. To everyone else, I concur...

Why you got to be hating us Chevy Drivers [V] as if I don't pay homage to you BMW drivers already [rolleyes]. I just simply don't have the money to buy myself my "dream car" and at the moment I have to deal w/ Chevy [:(!] but then again to add a little something about the negative comments hmph. hmph...This kid in our school got an M3 probably a E36 not sure..in any case it has the DINAN badge and I assume its not fake but who knows has stickers on it but not a big spoiler so I figure, hey why not talk to the guy and I did and we had a good BMW conversation and he also mentioned how the great number of Subarus and Hondas and Acuras that pretty much fill my school lot just bash him. I think he and another kid own Bimmers as for me I only have the respect to show[xx(]. In any case my best friends a ricer but atleast he knows that Bimmers are quite the nice car. I think I overkill though because I do tend to brag about alot of the things BMW has and everyone thinks I'm making them look like crap, I just love BMW. In any case I think us Bimmer Heads just have to keep out mouths shut when it comes to arguing w/ ricers, its like running a race in the special olympics even if they win they still retarded (not to be mean to the special people out there). In any case if I had a BMW I'd be damn proud of it and even if they beat me like someone else said in another post I'd still go to sleep loving it the same as before [thumb] [^].

In any case thats my .2cents of soap box action [sing] [headbang]

P.S. [EDIT] Yeah FF and 2F2F really have hiped up ricers these days and all we have to wait is for the N00b crotch rocket owners to pop out w/ the new movie TORQUE...oh yeah there will be some I gaurantee [:p]. All this world needs is a pure EUROPEAN car action movie...like THE TRANSPORTER (good bmw action there), but something more racy. In anycase I'll shut up this post is long enough already [:D]

I think the difference in attitude comes from age. If im not mistaken, most E46 drivers ar probably in mid 20's, if they bought it themselves. The average ricer is usually 18-23 years old. Then you are that young, you cant afford much, but you have alot to prove, to your peers and opposite sex.

As you get older, we are more sure of ourselves, there is less desire to be pretentious while having a greater craving for substance. We have less to prove, because we arent in a school environment, and likely be working professionaly, where theres already quite a few underlings. So a BMW is a monument to your success, an affirmation of you leadership and managerial status.[fake]

So a BMW is "I've made it and I'm here, look and respect!" (since the car is a statement while motionless) [:o]
And a ricer is:"I'm not there yet, but this is the best I can do!" (since the car often needs to be running and racing to prove its performance)[hihi]

JUST MY OPINION.[thumb]

ricers normally ignore me, so i dont mess with them untill they mess with me. the locals here in antioch dont realize my cars fast or something.

i used to get a few glares in slow traffic because of my age, but i didnt care, unless they jumped out and attacked me or something. but i too am a little wary at saying what i drive. what makes it worse is that i dont techinically own my car. [:(]

my dad bought my 330i after the automatic transmission went out in my 325i conv. he said that the car will be in his name untill i graduate college with a high gpa (assuming 3.5 ish). i dont mind though, it makes me feel like i earned it.

I get good feedback usually too. All my friends love my car and i have gotten thumbs up on the road, and compliments by people from parking lots to gas stations, heck even from people just crossing the street in front of me when im stopped at a crosswalk. I do feel a little uncomfortable when people a lot older than me ask me about my car, or give me looks as if someone my age should have such a car. I mean dont get me wrong I love my car and im thankful to be able to have such a nice ride, but its not like I got a ferrari or something. I mean, Im a senior in college, I used to see freakin 16 yer lds in high school with their beamers...I love my car, and I dont care what anyone else thinks. FOr those that give me compliments...coo, but for those haters...whatever...theyre not worth my time, I'm a busy guy, what with work, class and waxing my beautiful beamer...hahaha.

My neighbor and his lil brother think I shoulda gotten an Evo like him or an STi like the lil bro wants. But, they're youngish and still in the ricer stage. Other than that, no specific negative comments... just good ones.

Still, I think my license plate gets more reactions than the car does (too many BMWs around here)... or at least the license plate in conjunction with the car.

I don't understand this whole anti-Chevy sentiment. I mean, you are projecting the exact same attitude that that these Chevy owners who don't like your car are projecting to you. If you own a BMW and you don't like their car, why should they care? And why should you care if they drive a Chevy or a Ford or other "lesser" non-BMW car? Buying a BMW is not a "better decision" for everyone. If you don't like people that give you crap about your BMW, then be a better person and don't give people crap for not being able to afford a BMW or who simply don't want to drive a BMW. In my experience, it was always the kids who had the BMWs and Mercedes in high school that were the cocky SOBs, but in reality, I could take them any day of the week with my Chevy. And, by the way, I don't know where you are from, but a $25K car is not a cheap car. A $40K BMW is an expensive car, and a $40K BMW is a cheap BMW. My point is that BMWs are expensive cars, and not a whole hell of a lot of people can afford a car like that (especially for their kid!!) or would care to spend that much on something that is going to do nothing but depreciate in value.

Just be happy that you have a BMW that you like, and let them be happy that they have a Chevy that they like. In reality, it should all come down to whether or not the car is right for you, right? Not what other people think. Unfortunately that's not how our society that is so caught up with vanity and "putting on a show for other people" works.

PS - It's a Camaro, not a Comaro or a Camero. Sorry, just a pet peeve of us lesser people who own Camaros. [rolleyes]
