I paid $1000 over invoice. Almost certainly coulda gotten more off, but I made the mistake of falling in love with the car. Damn BMW, so desirable. This is for SoCal where there are a TON of dealers so discounts are probably higher than other parts of teh country with less competition.

Anyways, you NEVER look at how much off MSRP. You ALWAYS look at how much over invoice. For BMW, only the M cars are desirable enough where dealers refuse to negotiate from anywhere but MSRP (or over). The non-M cars should all be negotiated starting from the invoice.

Yeah, what he said. I have no idea what MSRP was for my car---it was never part of a discussion or part of my thought process. That said, I paid $1500 over, which I thought was a good deal at the time before reading this thread. Now I'm, not so sure!

$3,890 under invoice for Euro-Delivery purchased through Military New Car Sales. But I had to pay $550 for shipping to this island, $50 for customs, and $30 for the crane operator to bring the container off the dock to outside the port area. ($3,890 - $630 = $3,260) but.....
new bimmer? priceless.

So much for thinking I was brilliant! Paid Cdn$2,000 under MSRP....but haven't a clue how much above invoice that was! Then again...the car doesn't arrive until next week...so maybe I can renegotiate![:D]

I leased mine in November 2004. I got a 2003 325i. The cap cost was approximately $800 below invoice.

It mad more sense to lease a 2003 325i even though the 2004s were available because of the cap cost reduction and the minimal decrease in residual value. Plus, the money factor was quite good.

But once a car is purchased, it means nothing to compare prices. Sometimes it just leads to heartache.

Exactly. If it's too late, then there's nothing you can do about it except cause unnecessary grief. I know I coulda gotten lower, but I'm not gonna really think about it too much. Just enjoy my car.

For invoice with options, I like using Carsdirect.com I was gonna buy through them, but I used AAA (the roadside service people) and they had some fleet price. That was actually lower than the carsdirect price and I used the AAA price as the starting point for negotiations. I never even found out what my MSRP was either cuz it's completely irrelevant.

Agreed...not worried in the least...and can't wait for the car to arrive next week. Besides, I'm pretty sure I got a good deal anyway. My only second thought is whether I should've gone for the 325xi instead. Anyone know whether the exhaust tips are chrome...the 325xi in the showroom had them & I forgot to ask whether they were optional or not.

That's a good question. My car came with chrome exhaust tips but apparently some people didn't get them. My dealer didn't mark the tips down as a dealer installed accessory and I know if it weren't standard, my dealer woulda charged for it.

Just checked with the dealer on those chrome-tipped exhausts - apparently the 325xi comes with them...but not the garden-variety 325. I think they look great...and well worth the extra Cdn$90 or so they're going to cost. Apparently the car was loaded onto the train on the 11th (a week after I'd put the downpayment on it)....and is still a week and a half away...arrrgh! Ahh well, I suppose it's a bit like waiting for Christmas when you were a kid....interminable!

The discount from MSRP on my 2004 330i w/perf pkg amounted to $1500 from the dealer plus $500 back from BMW NA for being a BMW CCA club member. I took delivery Jan 13.

Yeah...but even the supposed "invoice" is kind of a bait a switch. I saw the "invoice" that was given to my dealership, which is partially owned by a friend of my former boss. Dealerships get annual rebates, discounts, kick-backs, whatever you want to call them for meeting sales targets, advertising, marketing, warranty repair figures, etc. The invoice price isn't the real cost to the dealership.

I suppose it's one way to good guage whether you got a good deal or not. But the only way to tell is to call other dealers and tell 'em exactly what you want...down to the style of wheels. Then you know.

But after it's all over...I agree...no sense in second guessing.

Our experience was fully at one dealer. We went in asking about used and new, and he worked up a price for a new because at the time there were no used conv's available. He said he had two slots allocated to them and quite honestly, if we didn't make a decision in a day or so he could give the slot to the next person through the door.

We thought about it overnight, and the next day went back (probably a Saturday). he checked, still had both slots, and sure enough, the very next person through the door sat down at the next desk, and looked at the sales guy and asked to purchase the exact same car we were getting, thus taking both slots. He never asked the price, just listed out what he wanted, the calculator whirred, and he wrote a deposit check.

The sales guy commented how this was the easiest car line he ever sold, most people coming in are ready to buy and don't need to be sold, know what the price should be, and as long as it's close don't argue.

Either that, or it was the free floor mats they toss in.
