You know, I looked in the owner's manual and on Owner's Circle. Maybe I missed it, but I never saw when the air filter is supposed ot be replaced. I see when the cabin filter is supposed to be replaced, but not the air filter.

Anyone know BMW's suggested change interval and the real world change interval?

blkonblk330i is correct. When I had may car in for an oil change at 6700mi I asked about the air filter for both the ouside and the cabin, they said they would inpect it and if it needed changing it would be changed. They said and normal change interval is 30k. I looked at it the other day due to the fact I was going on a trip, I think it need to be changed now, thats my opinion. I mean its an air filter why not change it when they do the oil change, it just them BMW being cheap, and trying to push it to the limit.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna take a look and just change it myself if it looks dirty. There's no way I'd wait 30K for them to change my filter, even if I'm located near the coast where the air is cleaner.

They're pretty cheap...you can get aftermarket ones or just go to the dealership...be sure to show your BMWCCA membership card for an extra 10-15% off. I've bought BMW Original and some STP and another brand can't recall now. They are all comparable. I'm sure there are air filter connoseurs on here that would argue only one brand is the best, but I think the point is to change it at least once or twice a year...keep that fresh air flowing freely. I change mine twice a year, before and after winter. Since I keep a frequent change interval, I don't go crazy on any expensive brand filters.

If you live in dusty areas, like the desert (Vegas)...you'll change more than someone in less dusty places. Oh, when you unsnap the housing, I've found it's a good idea to use an indoor/outdoor vac in there, cuz I've found bees and bugs and little sand gets caught in there.

Good luck...is this one of your first DIY's?!? I never did anything to a car until I bought my 3 series...now I love working on my car...not that I can do all that much...before you know it, you'll be replacing a hose here or there, doing your own belts...hahahaha!

No, basic, basic maintenance like this I do myself. On my Civic, it's a regular car so it's easy. Change oil every 3000 miles, check air filter at that time. Change when dirty.

On the BMW, the oil change interval got extended, so I wasn't sure if the air filter got extended too. Plus, the BMW has extremely low miles and in some of the cleanest air LA has.

Most car manufacturers recommend to have it changed every 30K miles, but I think annually is definitely a better way to go. Actually, come to think of it, I need to change my air filter !!!!!!!!!!!!!
