Good question. I go with Chevron cuz I've heard that BMW recommends their Techron additive.

I've read articles that say all the gas is the same...it comes from the same regional refineries in most cases. The ONLY difference is the additives and detergents they add at the retail level.

I'm not sure why Chevron's Techron is recommended. Anybody know why?

I recently went from CO. to AL and back since the holidays, changed gas as many times as I gassed up. I tracked the miles, gas type, octane and driving habits. I analyzed my results after I returned. No significant differences notes regardless of type gas used, (chevron, texaco, shell, bp, conoco, it didn't matter) as long as the octane rating was 91 or higher.

That was a pretty good idea :) We go with the cheapest premium gas then.

[wave] lpquick , you are definately an enthusiast when it comes to fuel and oil ..or maybe a fanactic..[:D]

I use premium ( 92 ) at shell or Costco if I'm near the area because it can be 20 cents cheaper .Costco is an outlet store or a wholesale store with membership . so is Sam's Club .

I use Chevron and or Costco (both got high marks in an independant survey)with a little Redline SI-1 Injector cleaner everyother tank or so.

Careful with the Ethanol/Methanol blends, I have heard that they are very hard on gaskets.

Well just watch out for those NO NAME gas stations which dont clean their tanks or "waterdown" their gas, when it comes to name brands then yes you can chase the penny[thumb]

The difference is the additive package. You can add Techron yourself or an equivalent to any gas but the Costco gas as pumped into your car does not have the best additive package. It is designed to keep the price down according to the local BMW dealer. The additive you can buy with the BMW label on it is Chevron's Techron. Almost all the gas comes into this area through the same pipeline and then the additive package is added. Carbon buildup is what you want to avoid as much as possible. The BG additive (available at some BMW dealers), while not cheap, is among the best and only need be added once or twice to a tank of gas each year because it is highly concentrated.

As I've said, I haven't noticed any issues in the approximately 7 years I've used the blended stuff...but, since i'm about to be delivered my first Bimmer, I'd like to explore that gasket issue. Where did you get that information from? Does BMW have any info on the subject of fuels?

Here is some information on Methanol/Ethanol. I have heard that BMW does not recommend either. I know that Methanol is the primary one that has negative reactions to gasket material and seals. I do not know as much about Ethanol but will keep looking:

Methanol

LOL....well no danger of me going anywhere near Methanol. Thanks for the link! I can't imagine an Ethanol blend (I think it's only 5%) would do much if any damage....the stuff is in pretty wide use up here.
