If i need to top up the oil, what is the difference between Castrol 5w30 or 5w50? The local shop only had 5w50 and i wasn't sure what i should be using as i've only heard about the 5w30.
Thanks

Use 5w-30, which is the recommended rating for your car, right? I believe the different ratings are for different oil thicknesses??? I think it's weird that they didn't have 5w-30, though...MANY cars use 5w-30. Also make sure it is synthetic oil.

This whole oil change business still has me confused. I understand that the synthtic oils don't break down the way the standard oils do, but to go 10,000 - 12,000 miles in varying conditions and temperatures between oil changes just seems crazy to me. I mean the oil itself may not break down, but it's going to be loaded with contaniments. dirt, moisture, engine metal shavings, dust, etc. etc. etc.
Can someone explain this to me? Please use one syllable words because I obviously am challenged in this regard [fake]

I've been using Mobil 1 in my cars and trucks for a couple of years ..not a bad price for a good quality synthetic oil.

The numbers are the viscosity ratings ( thickness ) for cold and hot temps..lower no. is when cold and higher is for higher temps..I see you live in canada so you can adjust for your weather conditions .. your manual or even the oil bottle will have a chart for what viscosities to use for what weather temps you're having..

I'd use 5w-30w Mobil 1 .

indeed ... thats why you should get your oil changed every 7500 miles ... and have the dealer pick up every other one for free ..

since we got on the topic of oil changes, what is usualy included with an oil change when you go to the dealer? Just wondering if i went to get an oil change if they would check anything that would be included with it like levels, underneath ect. just like when you go to any other place. I know they have their inspection I & II, when your inspection odometer comes close to time to get it checked what usualy should you get done?
Thanks

I agree with mallards. I use Mobil One and change it every 3-5k, depending on the variables (weather, temp, dust, driving patterns, etc.) I prefer the synthetic and do not mind the little added expense of changing it more often (extra insurance). Regardless of what you use I would change it more often than 15k. By the way Castrol Syntec is not 100% synthetic, they changed their formula.

I am not sure what the "recommended" oil is. The last I heard was that Castrol made BMW's motor oil, after taking the contract from Mobil One. I posted a link in another thread about the synthetic oil debate and it mentioned Castrol changing their formula. Mobil complained about them using the word synthetic and the oil advertising industry sided with Castrol. Here is the link:

There is a BIG difference between Castrol that BMW recommends and the Castrol made here in the states! Hense the reason you can only get Castrol 10w60 at the dealer, they import it!

I remember when I was working at a garage, in between my graphic art jobs. We received in a case of Castrol that had Quaker State lids on the cans. Yeah, I'm telling my age here, these were those paper cans that had the metal tops or lids on them. We snaped a photo and started digging around. It seems at that time, Quaker State had the license to produce oil as Castrol in the states. Dunno if that has changed since then or not.

After seeing what Quaker State did to air cooled Porsche rocker arms, I vote for Mobil1!

Ok, so is Mobile 1 the only readily available Group IV motor oil? And is the dealer Castrol ok? The reason I ask is I don't feel like having to have my motor oil shipped to me. I wanna find a cheap store and pick it up right before I change it. Apparently there's a dealer near me that sells teh dealer stuff for at or less than Castrol or Mobile 1 in stores.

hey everyone,

My car is close to 7500 miles now and I'm about to do oil change myself for the first time on a BMW..anything I need to know about or aware first???

I'm going to use Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic oil..then when my car get to 15,000 miles,,dealer will change it for free...so I assume dealer using Castrol oil..so it's ok to use mobil 1 and Castrol on the same car????

thanks

I did some asking around. Apparently most companies switched back to Group IV.

Dumayou: shouldn't matter. When you change your oil, you drain most of the old stuff out. So, what little there is left would be severely diluted by the new stuff. Plus, most oil is generally the same. It's not like you're adding oil and water together.
