whisltling noise from the air vents???

Not exactly sure what it is but the same thing happened to me, but it didn't happen all the time. I had the whistling problem and also the fan would blow air out whatever speeds it wanted to (even if i set it on low) so I brought it to the dealer and had them check it out. Of course when I got to the dealer it didn't whistle anymore and didn't whistle when they were running tests. They did fix the fan speed problem (they replaced the final stage blower unit) and the whistling never happened again either.
I was having the same problem with my 99 323i. I took it into BMW and they said that it was an evaporator problem. They fixed it under warranty and the whistling stopped.
For a temporary fix (because I had to wait 2 months for my service appointment). I filled it with more R-134A and it stopped the whistling for a good month.
