Hey guys,

I have Myrtle wood trim in my car and i noticed that on my shift knob and underneath it that the wood trim has started to crack. Does anyone know what would cause this and should i be worried about it (except for the look)....i'm gonna give the dealer a call to see if its covered under warranty

Are you sure it's a crack and not a scratch? Because if it's only a scratch on the wood trim, there are certain products you can use to fix that right up.

Just an update....

I brought my car in to the dealer today to get my window fixed and i let the dealer know about the cracking in the wood trim. He said that it's normally covered under warranty but he didn't have the final say in whether or not it would be deemed a defect. He said that it was up to his manager, but more likely than not it would be covered. Anways my service advisor told me that they would prolly have to order the wood trim and that it may be a slightly different color which i guess there's nothing i can do cuz if it's a different tree it's a different color. I guess i would rather have a slightly different shade than cracked wood trim.

You should be OK---the shade difference should be slight. Out of curiosity, which dealer are you working with?

I have wood trim as well and if my dealer said it would be a diff. color I would suggest to them to change all the wood trim to make it match. I would hate to try and sell the car only to have the prospective buyer point out the trim mismatch. The dealer doesn’t have to own the car with mismatched trim. If they balk ask them if they would sell a new one with trim that doesn't match. IMO, I believe they should change it all if it is a diff. color especially if it is covered under warranty. That's just my two cents on the subject.

xmas,

the dealer is BMW of North Haven, who i HIGHLY recommend, i didn't buy my car from them but i went to them b/c i had such bad service from the place that i bought the car from (New Country Motor Cars in Hartford)....it wasn't just one occurrence either.....and when i talked to the service manager, he just patronized me and didn't really care what i had to say so i said f*ck you all, i'm goin somewhere else....where do u go?

and m speed, i totally agree with u, i'm gonna see how it looks first before i put up a big stink about it.....i have a feeling i'm gonna have to go back there and get the rest changed anyways....

I agree with you tripulldee, I would wait to see what it looks like and just how much it doesn't match. You never know it could match. Your right to let them do the work before asking to replace all of the trim, but don't let them bully you into accepting something that does not match especially if it is under warranty. You have to live with the car.

No, guy. Regardless of what anyone has said, BMW wood trim (as well as Lexus and Mercedes wood trim) is completely real. In fact, these companies have their own plantations in which they grow their own trees to use as the wood tirm for their cars.

I heard somewhere that Bentley's with wood trim, the whole tree is dedicated to ur car for cases like this....if the original cracked or needed to be replaced, then they have reserves of the same one for u

Our 2003 325xi was delivered with faulty wood trim. The finish was hazy on the center piece above the CD player.

Initially the dealer replaced the single piece, but it clearly did not match the rest of the trim. For many of the reasons mentioned earlier in this thread, we then insisted that they replace the entire trim kit.

They eventually replaced the entire trim kit, however, while at the dealership, the dealer damaged the roof of the car when it was placed in a stacker.
