I just bought a 99 323i and already my windsheild got cracked by a rock and I have to replace it and second the ring that goes around the tweeter on the door panel has broken off and the speaker fell into the door panel. Now I called BMW and the first time they were closed so I called another one in another city to get a price and they told me that it would cost me 2.50 for the ring....Now I called my bmw dealership and they told me I have to replace the whole dam speaker and its gonna cost 250 for the tweeter....are these guys busting my balls just so they can make money off me or is it necessary to replace the whole speaker....???? [bash]

Err, sounds like they are adding in labor to take the door apart, which they might have to do to reseat the speaker, make sure it's not gonna fall out again, and replace that O ring. But $250 is outrageous (It's a dealership, what do you expect??). It's a DIY if you're marginally mechanically inclined, I'd think. Why would you need a new speaker??? (Did it get damaged? Did it work fine before it 'fell' out?)

Yah the 'stealership' is trying to stick it to ya I'd say.

The airbag is mounted to the door behind the door panel. You don't have to worry about it if all you have to do to get to the speaker is remove the door panel.

Unless you have to remove it to get to the speaker for some reason. In that case, you would have to disconnect the battery, wait 20 minutes, and remove the air bag and its power connector. This is so the backup airbag power (the bags will work for a short time even if power is lost, a safety feature) can discharge safely. It probably takes less than 20 mins, but that is what BMW calls for. Removing the bags is a bit scary but just be fearless and trust yourself. Just don't power up the car without the bag connected as you will generate fault codes that will light your airbag light, which can only be cleared using a fault clearing tool. Plus you will have to wait another 20 mins to reconnect it after taking the battery cable off again.

I know all this airbag stuff because I had to remove my front door bags to replace the window regulators in my X5.

I think the guys posted the best avenue - Find a junkyard and just look for totaled cars like yours, and grab a speaker ring. I'd imagine a stock item like this could probably be ordered, check out circlebmw.com, they are good at having OEM parts for bimmers.

You should only need that ring, all it is is 'trim' basically, I'm sure your speaker is still quite healthy. Bummer that the dealer is freaking, do they 'think' the speaker is blown (They prolly heard it popped out and instantly thought the worst)?

Anyway good luck on the repair, dunno about the airbags but I think bmwrocks covered that DIY quite well. [:)]

This doesn't surprise me one bit. Many BMW parts are sold as "assemblies". I have no doubt that they do not package the parts separately, meaning you have to buy the whole assembly even though you only need the ring.

The junkyard thing is a good possibility, but a pain in the arse.

Remember taking off the door panel is not a trivial task, you have to know where all the "hidden" screws are.

$60 for a Bentley manual and $2.50 for a ring. Sounds good to me. While you're in there, spend another $250.00 and get some bad ass components to replace the stock speaks.[drinking]
