I don't see any reasons why BMW will stop the production of ZHP. Are you going to get one?

I would think so also, however they will be releasing the new 3/4 series at that time and the ZHP may still be under the E46 design.

A co-worker's Dad just ordered a 330ci ZHP. The dealer rep told him that the ZHP *could* become a very desirable "collectible" because they are only being produced this year. He said that with the model change the ZHP won't be available for a few years.

Of course, keep in mind this is a salesrep talking - may or may not really know anything...

I want to get one next year if it is still available. On a side note, my obnoxious co-worker just bought a new 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 3.8 260hp supercharged v6. He brags that he can beat any BMW except for an M3 or M5. What is he thinking? That is a 15.0 second 1/4 mile car which weighs 3600 pounds. Why does GM need a blower to get 260hp out of a 3.8 when the M3 gets 333hp from a N/A 3.2? [bash]

Because the 3.8 is basically a run-of-the-mill 12 valve, single cam pushrod 3800 engine with a blower on it. It's a very simple engine that does not have all the sophisticated electronics, variable valve timing stuff, and race-bred components that the M3 engine does. The M3 is basically a streetable racing engine. They are two completely different animals, and you can't even begin to compare them on the same plane. You also need to remember that the GTP has 280 lb-ft of torque vs. the M3's 262 lb-ft (which comes in at a loftier RPM). My girlfriend has a '97 GTP with the Series II blown 3800 (240 hp), and that thing hauls ass in a major way. It wouldn't have any problems taking on a stock non-M BMW in a straight line, so I'm sure the new Series III GTP wouldn't either. I think the matchup between a new GTP and the M3 would be a closer straight line race than you are imagining, especially given the torque advantage of the GTP. Handling and comfort are a different story, however, although the Comp G GTP might be getting about as close to the handling of a regular 3 series as a FWD car can get (at least on paper).

Here come the flames....... [boxface]

the question maybe better asked how come gm needs a blower to get 260 and acura can get 270 out of a NA? i suppose when gm gets pissed, they can always draop a small block on any o their cars [:p]

i would really like to see that race between a new GTP and the new 330. I figure it would be pretty close. I used to have a 97 gtp and that thing did screw. changed the pully on the supercharger to one of a smaller diameter and that thing was "wicked" fast. I had borla and a cone intake and the car sounded great, but at any rate, i take my 330 over that car any day of the week. [headbang]

LOL....it's a Comparison of a Pontiac Grand Prix to a BMW. Totally different class, regardless of power & speed.

Nice Camaro, Justin.
Yep, that's what I was trying to say - they are very different beasts that can't be compared to one another. I think alot of people really underestimate the GTPs though. They are torque monsters. I still don't think a new GTP would have much problems dealing with a 330 in a straight line. However, that's where the comparison ends. My girlfriend's '97 GTP has horribly uncomfortable seats, really cheaply made doorpanels, the dash is degrading from sitting outside, the radio display intermittently doesn't work, it has developed a front end vibration on the interstate (that no one seems to be able to fix), and the paint is oxidizing (but, she may be more to blame for that since she doesn't wax it very often). It handles ok, but it's nothing spectacular, and it feels like a boat when I drive it. The GTP could take the 330 in a straight line, but man if I wouldn't take a 330 over one in a heartbeat.

BTW, thanks for the complement.

Not trying to bash GM, but if you ever sat in a Corvette and an M3, all of us here would prefer the M3. It's like the people out there with Tag Heuer watches who think everyone overpaid for their Rolex and vice versa. It's a totally different kind of animal and it is all relative when it comes to money. It depends on your individual tastes and your definition of quality and beauty. People tell me I wasted $42k for a BMW but I think spending $32 on a Pontiac is worse. To each his own.

[cheers]

Gp = Pos

Just spent a week in a renter '04 Grand Prix. Admittedly it was low end, but it was the least user-friendly car I've driven in a long time. Outward vision is terrible except straight ahead (though it still has the biggest side mirrors around). Just pulling the door shut requires a headbob to clear the slanty roof/A-pillar line. Interior is all this techno metal crap that GM and Chrysler now seem so in love with - looks like the inside of a homebuilt computer. Handling (not a GTP) was wobbly. On San Diego freeways, it hauled ass fine, but any twisties disturbed it mightily. Auto four-speed lurches.

Having had a '97 GTP (I think that was the year - first model year), both my wife and I found this update to be a huge step backwards. Driving my VW '00 GTI home from airport last nite, was impressed with night/day difference - GTI is not a BMW, but it is lightyears ahead of the GTP in handling.

BTW, I pick up my new ZHP ... TODAY! Then I gotta tell my wife I bought it - I'm sure she'll notice it in the garage and probably say something.

Can the ZHP package being ordered through your dealership. And what does it include? I just ordered my second 325, and I feel like I have been missing out on something I never knew about. Thanks

Yes JT - ZHP is a standard option - check the build your own on the BMWUSA site.

My salesperson told me that the new 3 series would be out in September BTW....which I do not at all believe...I mean we've seen 1 & 2 pics and such - but very little of the new 3-4...and its not out in Germany yet either...any word? (and does BMW typically just spring models on the public without press build up, literature and such?...I don't know...

I think she was trying to make me feel bad or something because I scored such a good deal on a ZHP Euro delivery....while I might (certainly) wish for more HP likely in the new engines (heard something about a 355i)...thus far I perfer the current design - particulalry in the ZHP & M ....and the whole package of the vehical suits me just fine - old model style or not...what I don't want is it any larger then it is - or any bloatier...and I certainly don't need idrive or any other luxuries (or plushness) of the sort...oh and good news - just got my Munich delivery center pick up date - July 19...I'm really stoked!
