Both Rear Springs Broke on a 2001 !!?

I drive a 2001 325i in the New England (USA) area. My mechanic discoverd BOTH rear springs have snapped near the bottom part of the coils. I find this highly unusaual for automobiles, in general. Is it unusual for this model? Does anyone know of a recall, or material defect? I've hit potholes, but that is crazy! (Incidentally, my shocks are also a bit leaky).
Thanks for any help.

You do not say how many miles are on the car? This can make a big difference. I know of no coil spring recalls, and would call this unusal if the car has low miles, is not driven hard on harsh roads and has not carried heavy loads. The biggest factor is going to be the "potholes" you mention and the age (in mileage) of the springs.

The car has appx. 85,000 miles on it (average, yes?). I do not drive the car hard, and I am sure I have hit a pothole or two, but nothing that, in my opinion, would warrent both springs snapping in two. I mean, c'mon, it's suppose to be the "ultimate driving machine"! Do you think I have any recourse with BMW, or is this just "buyer beware"?

I do not think BMW is going to cover this, although you could ask. Springs are subject to corrosion, do you live where they salt the roads? Have you owned the car since new or did you buy it used? Since the shocks are leaking, a sign of a damaged shock I would suspect someone hit something hard. I would buy some after market springs and shocks and up my suspension at this time.

I had a spring break on my 94, but I think it broke during an autocross event, so I can't really complain. I have heard of a few other older E36 springs breaking, I think Selavia just had one break.

I agree with Dan, if you have leaky shocks at 80K miles, that is unusual and a sign that maybe something took a hard hit. Another possibility is that the car was overloaded - too much weight.

Also, you didn't say if you have owned the car from new, or bought it used. If used, the PO could have caused the damage.

I bought the car new, so, unfortunately, all the potential wear and tear has come from me!! The thing is, I believe I would remember a hard hit/pothole. Also, I do not carry heavy loads - assuming by that you mean something highly unusual (i.e., not typical household groceries, small appliances, etc.). It really astounds me that this could happen to a car I thought would be able to easily sustain normal all-season road conditions.

One of mine broke recently. There wasn't much rust where it snapped. It was the rear spring, driver's side. I believe what finally did mine in was the commute I'm on. The powers to be are / were tearing up I95 and 695 and I drive +120 miles a day on those roads and I could feel the roads unevenness. The road stripper must have had the hiccups because it felt like I was constantly going over speed bumps after they tore up the road. It's terrible, especially at 75mph. Also, mine has +140K miles on them through snow, etc. But for only 100k miles, I think that is premature wear. Apparently its more common on e36 than I would have like to believe, but I haven't heard much for the e46.

Good luck

Okay, I give - what's a sub-frame assembly, and what could he possibly find there? Evidence of something bigger going on? If so, like what??? VERY auto-UNsavvy.
Thanks for any help!!!!

I don't mean for this to sound unfriendly, but I would like to add that once the warranty is up, "recourse with BMW" and "buyer beware" don't apply. The car is over 6yrs old and has 80k on it. That comes out to roughly 13k a year, that is believe it or not, high mileage for the car. I attempted to trade my 04 330i into a dealer with 33k on it at 2 1/2yrs old, and the dealer said according to the black book the car has high mileage as these luxury cars are usually driven <10k a year. He advised me to try and sell it myself and offered assistance in doing so as it would be "better than any offer they would give me".

In the NYC area and I presume Boston to be the same, that car would sell for 10-14k depending on how good it looks and runs. Also Mass has some pretty bumpy roads, the constant speed bump feeling comparison is valid, I drove on the Mass turnpike before with a rental car and my do the roads need repaving. In Newton, the best suburb, even the yellow lines that divide the road are worn off, they heavily salt the roads up there. I would say as a result of age, high mileage, harsh winters, tons of salt, and bad roads, little by little the damage occurred.

I agree it sucks, I would not want to be stuck with the bill, but then again high mileage BMWs are not cheap to maintain. I personally don't think the E46 3 series is that durable of a vehicle.

I would have to agree with you on all counts! No offense taken - 13K probably is considered high mileage for this car - I had some false expectations of this automobile given the price tag. I now know you can obtain just as good, if not better reliability from Honda or Toyota, and at a much less expensive price. I've had two Hondas, and both were superb cars. Admittedly, they were not as fun to drive as my BMW. Live and learn!!
