Hi a local dealer is selling a '95 318i and i was considering picking it up. Im concerned because it has 150K miles. The car looks well maintain, interior flawless and runs strong. Just wondering what are some things i should look out for...

It has around 150,000 thousand miles. its a manual transmission. 2-door. It has everything in-tact. all the tools to fix a flat. The AC doesnt work tho... the dealer guy said he just changed the rack and pinion because it was leaking...??? dont know what he meant by that straight chassis, no signs of accidents. He's asking 4500

That's on the high side of what I would pay unless I knew for certain that some items have been recently replaced:
- Radiator
- water pump
- Guibo (flex disk in the drive train)
- struts

If all of these items have never been replaced, they will be failing soon. DIY=$750, having it done by a shop will cost $1500 - $2000 maybe more.

If it has all the records and all that stuff has already been done, $4,500 is not a bad price. Also keep in mind that the suspension probably is getting to ready for replacement (not just the struts). I had a rear spring crack on me; and apparently that is not uncommon.

Also, adding to Kirby's fine list:

Thermostat
O2 Sensor
Cat Converter (depending on the type of driving on the first 150k
Muffler (depending how loud it is getting)
Control Arms (+Bearings)
Tie rods (Although, if he replaced the rack, probably did this as well)

Also, what's wrong with the A/C? Is it the compressor? That's an expensive part.

You are going to wish you have (good) air conditioning. It is better that you have the dealer fix it before you make an offer on it. [?|]b
