I have a 2000 BMW 328Ci. The car was a southern car and has never seen cold weather. It's around 20-40 degrees here. I've had the car for about a week. When I start the car in the morning, it will run for about 3-5 minutes and then shut off. I'll restart it and it will be fine. In the 7 days I've had the car, it's done this about 5 of the 7 days. Any suggestions??

Also, on the milage gauge where it tells you the outside temp, MPG, and time- the outside temp stays at -40 and the MPG stays at 34.5. They never change and it will blink and beep at me. Does anyone know how to fix this? Do I need to reset something? If so, how?

And last, how do I change the time on the stereo? Car had no manual. I've always owned American Muscle so all of these electronic are a little new to me. Thanks!!

Welcome to BMW ownership my friend.

My 01' 330CI showed some of the symptoms that you wrote. A couple of questions first...

(1) Is the Check Engine light on?
(2) What's the millage on the car?

Possible causes; Oxygen Sensor, CamShaft Sensor, ETC

As for the Temperature showing -40Degrees, I can tell you that the " Ambient (Outside) Temperature Sensor (Part #65816905133) is dead. ($35 dollar part at www.Autohaus.com)

The MPG is supposed to say that way. You reset it by PUSHING AND HOLDING the button thing until it resets. (This works when the car is in movement)

As far as the Radio, and other tricks, visit....http://www.odometer-correction.com/forum/ftopic33.html

The check engine light is NOT on. The car has 100,000 miles on it. The MPG is not supposed to change? See, on my GTP it would go up and down and then you reset it when you fill the tank. I'll have to try resetting it and see what happens. I'll check out the site on the clock. Thanks for the headsup.

Update

I found out what the problem was. The thermostat. I should have figured that. Instead of the car not pushing enough coolant and overheating, the coil is not compressing all of the way and it's not allowing the thermostat to close and let the motor come up to temperature. Being the car takes forever to heat up, I should have known. So no biggie. Ordered my new thermostat for $50 and putting it in this weekend. Just wanted to update in case someone else has a similar problem.

2000 BMW 328i shuts off in morning

I also have a 2000 BMW 328i and 9 times out of 10 the car shuts off on me in the morning if I leave it in park longer than a minute or so. I did not take it to the dealer so they can charge $150 just to look at it. Once I'm at out of Park, my car runs like a dream. I have heard several reasons for this including, thermostat, idle valve, crank exhaust sensor, and the fuel injector. Can someone please help me narrow it down so I can get it fixed properly.

Thanks!
