I was bored and came across this auction on ebay for a full turbo kit for e36 6 cylinders...and the price is so low! im not sure if i would trust the claimed power figures (380-450 hp, about 200 hp gain) but it still seems like a great deal, with the turbo itself, the manifold, intercooler and blowoff valve, etc. anyway, its interesting but wouldn't the ecu need to be remapped or something? im just toying with possible projects here [scratch]

Seems.... Overwhelmingly cheap.

The actual turbo itself is one of the cheap componets of a turbo charged system.
Yes ecu reprograming would be in order not to mention some sort of fuel management system to boot! bigger injectors would be needed to get anywhere near the claimed 200Hp gain...
Though an interesting find at that [scratch]

Yeah, i wouldnt expect 400 hp from a non-vanos m50 with just a turbo kit. the new 335i uses a larger, newer engine and two turbos to generate 300 hp. the setup in the auction seems like a good way to go if someone is planning to turbo a 90s bmw inline 6 though, what with the manifold and everything included. But unfortunately i do not have the time or money to try turbocharging my bmw right now.

HAHAHAHAHA

Wow I needed a good laugh this morning. That kit is missing a lot of parts fellas. That turbo is small. That manifold will crack in 10k miles. And just because i'm hungover i'm skipping to the final point, IT'S MISSING TUNING!!!

lol what is the cheapest way to get a little more power out of my car, head work? cams, injectors ? what?
I'm going to try to cover a couple of your posts here, as we're not just here to help with technical stuff, but also with general advice.

You either want a turbo or you want cheap. You either want an M3 or a 328is. There's nothing actually slow about your car except the tranny. I've driven E36 328i's and they are bloody fast. But it's not as simple as bolting in a 5 speed and a turbo... this isn't going to be a cheap game, combined, or separate. 5 Speed you need a pedal set, master and slave cylinders, lines from the brake reservoir, and between the two cylinders, a clutch kit (beefy if you want a turbo), drive shaft, and shifter and linkage assembly. You better know a good wrecker or used parts guy, either that, find a E36 donor car with rear end or side damage and strip everything you need out of it in your garage.

A proper turbo job you need to do right unless you have a death wish on your engine. You need a @$$ load of new performace parts, but the main thing is you should really have the engine rebuilt before you do a turbo (IMO). There's no point in doing a turbo with worn piston rings and bearings, and really, that 5 speed needs to be in there first, or you'll be going though torque convertors like crazy.

The engine you have right now has plenty of power, and just like Joseph said, a Chip is where you can start if you haven't already. Then a nice cold air intake, and then a freeflow exhaust. Cams are not cheap. Neither is the labor, and I doubt you'd try them yourself. I wouldn't.

There is a multi trottle intake kit for your car, which isn't cheap, but it'll give you more power... with bigger injectors, bored throttle body, etc.

There are tonnes of options for E36's, but the 5 speed has to be there first.

Check these Tuners:
http://www.activeautowerke.com/ (Turbos)

http://www.uucmotorwerks.com/ (great stuff, like Short shift kits)

http://www.bmpdesign.com/ (Tonnes of great stuff... my favorite)

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/index.asp (lots of racing parts)

http://www.dinancars.com/Series.asp?Series=14&Chassis=11&Model=10&Class=Engine Tuning#3218 (Make a supercharger for your automatic!!)

http://www.kormanfastbmw.com/ (American racing team, performance parts)

These are all American based companies, and I (and others here) can vouch for Dinan, BMP, Turner, and UUC as being helpful, and have tricking out all my cars over the years. Browse their stuff and see what these things costs. Just remember, there is more to some of this stuff than bolt on garbage off Ebay. We are here to help, but we're not going to tell you to blow a few hundred on Ebay turbos and ask you how it went, and we're not going to tell you to spend $10G on proper system.

Really, I'd get that 5 speed in there, then call Dinan. Either that, or maybe you need to think about getting a different model, it's up to you, obviously.

What would be your budget for this car anyways, and what has already been done to it? (besides underdrive pullys... which I don't think really do anything most of the time)

actuall i woudl do them myself, and i alredy hav a donor car it just is missing the tranny and center councel , i am a ase certifired mechanic and one of my best friends own the biggest junk yard in my areah, which is a small town lol so it is not very big, but we do get a few bmws in there. im was a huge mustang freak, i used to build the fox body styles there are pictures of them on myspace. mustangturbo50 is the name. lol but i got my first bmw a little over a year ago and i will never go back to a mustang. i just dont know much abotu these cars but i am leaning. liek for instance they use the sealed system for vacuum, as a mustang when you pull the dipstick tube out it makes no difference. As fare as this car goes i really dont know much about it other than what the guy told me and i have no proof that it is true other than it will smoke my other 328i by a long shot. so im guessing he was not lying, i have put nothing on this car myself other than a brand new set of tires the same day i baught it. it was an ebay deal . i flew to new york and drove it back in one day. 900 miles. the guy said he put a 40,000 motor in it but before he put it in he pulled the head off had it gasket matched , ported and polished, and just a valve job, then he put m50 cams in it, im guessing those are just m3 cams? , he put the underdrive pulleys on it the cold air intake, and an aftermarket exhaust, now i dont know what kind it is he said he doesnt know either, but it sounds really good. he put sportline suspension on it and lowered it 2 inches, which i took off the as soon as the dealer got factory spings in, in just rode like a grain truck, not liek a bmw ya know. and then he also had Tokico Illuminas Adjustable suspension all the way around i left that on. well hey i got the actualual list of all the upgrades from the auction.

as fare as money goes i got this car dirt dirt dirt cheap even with my plane ticket and gas i have less than 4 grand in this car, the guy lost his job and need money so i took advantage of that, and we settled outside of ebay. So do i want to have 20 grand in this car no but it is a very clean and shard looking car and if i have 10 grand in it when its all said and done i wont be upset.

Having put an RMS Supercharger in my 328I, plus NOS, and having a heavy duty torque converter put in the trans, with Bilstien shocks, shock tower sway bars, and free flow exhaust, a rebuilt engine with polished intake ports, and a M3 Brembo brake system, and yes putting more money than a new 328I, all i can suggest is have fun with the upgrades, don't fret all the nay sayers, and by all means, enjoy the ride.
