I have a 1992 325i , 5 speed , 4 door sedan. It over heats at random. I'll be driving down the road just fine and all the sudden the heater will start blowing cold air and the car will start overheating. If I turn the fan off and on a few times it will usually cool back down , but not all ways. I took it to a mechanic and he said it was the fan clutch. My gut tells me he's wrong. Please help !!!

Why would turning my heater on and off have anything to do with the fan clutch? Would I be best off with an electric fan ? that would put less stress on the engine and give me a few more horse power . Could the problem be my auxiliary fan? Maybe just old wiring ?

Turning the fan on and off would not have any relationship with the fan clutch.

Have you bled the system properly? Air trapped in the system can cause this.

My thoughts exactly... I had problems with my E34 leaking fluid, causing air pockets, and blowing warm air. Run the car with the bleeder screw off for a while... (10 minutes)

well this car has a heater control valve so turnign your heater on will alow coolant to flow more and therefore cool you engine down. i had this problem with my 328i after puttign a new radiator in , it was just air pockets, i let i left my cap loose and let it idel till the stat opened and lett it bubble the air out and let it flow. i went throught abotu a gallon of coolant before i got all the air out., these cars seem to hold air pockets alot

Coolant level?

I'm sure that you already checked this... I have a 2003 Focus SVT and it was doing the same exact thing as your 325. First I thought that it was the thermostat or a cooling fan. I talked to my dad and he told me that since the car would start to "cool off" and blow cooler air when sitting still that it was probably just a low coolant level. When I filled in the missing fluid, the car worked perfectly again. Just a thought...
