Today at around 9am as my friend and I were leaving the gym and traveling east bound on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood....we had a terrible accident. As we we made a left hand turn off Sunset Blvd., a young kid in a old Nissan pickup truck hit the passenger side of our 2004 X5 at about 50mph. I was sitting on the passenger side where the truck hit. It was so horrible. 4 airbags went off, the entire passenger side is totaled, the footwell area is almost smashed into where the radio/Climate is and the interior is demolished.

The head airbag curtain (which I didn't even know existed) saved my life. The cop told me that the X5 and the airbags prevented my head from going through the side window. Right after the accident, all 4 doors unlocked, the interior lights came on, the hazards activated as did exterior lighting. The Navi system gave BMW our exact location along with our VIN # and other info about the car. BMW assist rocks when you have a bad accident!! Let me tell you....4 airbags going off and being hit at 50mph is Really terrifying.

I am so impressed with the safety of the X5, that I think I might dump my brand new 330cic with only 300 miles for an X.

X totaled...2 lives saved. Vielen Dank BMW!!!!!

wow, glad everyone made it out ok. Don't you have side airbags too? I feel pretty safe in my 3 series knowing there's a cocoon of airbags around me.

Sorry to hear about the accident, but I'm glad you emerged unscathed. This is an example of one of my arguments when people say that BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, etc. are too expensive for the money. Where would you be right now if you were in a Hyundai Sante Fe instead of a BMW? The $$ premium for these vehicles is insignificant compared to the value of life.

But I guess I'm "preaching to the choir" - that's why we all own BMWs.

Thank god you both are all right. BMW spends a lot of money on developing safety features is all their vehicles. This a true testament that it is money well spent. deutsch100, did you or your friend have any injuries at all? Hope the drive of the truck is doing ok as well....

Thanks for all the replies. Besides my shoulder, back and neck feeling "tweaked" and a headache we had no injuries. For about 6 hours my ear would not stop ringing from that head protection aribag going off...but it is fine now.

Considering how fast and hard the truck hit us, it is AMAZING that I am alive. I cannot believe how that X5 protected us. All I keep thinking about is that if we were driving the 330ci or the Z8....I would not be typing this email. Really scary!!!

I think the 330Ci would have held up fine... it's a lighter vehicle so it would have 'moved' quite a bit, which would asorb a lot of the impact. The 3 series is one of the safest cars on the market, and for the most part, cars are even safer than suv's becuase they are much more solid. The z8 is a different story though... its not exactly made with a LOT of saftey in mind, like the 3 series.

I'm glad you two are okay though! It seems that every serious bmw-accident story I hear on this forum in the past few years is with an X5.

First: I'm really glad you and your friend are ok.

2nd: It's a little sad that no one has asked how the kid who hit you came out of it.

Old Nissan pickup?
50 mph?

Is he alive?

He had no external injuries surprisingly...naturally though there is nothing left of his truck....it is just twisited metal. I think he was going to be taken to the hospital for evaluation. After the accident, I was kind of stuck in the passenger area, and didn't want to move or stop holding the side of my head due to the impact and pain/ringing I had in my ear/head...so I never got to really see him. Still feels very weird when life flashes so fast in front of you.

If the Ins. Co. does not total the X.....which I cannot imagine them not doing...the repairs are coming in around $20,000 (the BMW auto shop called this morning). Scheisse!!!

I am very sorry to hear of your accident. I am so glad no one was seriously hurt. Also glad to hear of the safety performance of your X5. Long live the Head Protection System.

Why do you think the 330 would have been so different? Because of the height difference? Because it does have the same complement of airbags as the X5.

After it was all over did you cry at the sight of your beautiful ex-X5? I would have.

a 330 convert vs a pickup truck? lol i bet the truck would just drive right over the top of the 330....

the vert shouldn't have side curtains...makes no sense.....unless they come out of the seats, but then well....nissan grill vs airbag =]

What little I saw of our "ex X5" was heart wrenching. I think the 330cic would have been deadly due to the fact that there is no Head protection system...only front & side bags. The speed of the truck and it's height would have been horrific As Bahnstormer said the truck would have driven over the cic " :)

I am most thankful that we were not in our Z8 Alpina. It sits so low to the ground, and the doors are about the size of Barbie's Corvette. The Z8 would have sure cost me my life...and just seeing that irreplaceable car totaled would have been enough to kill me...he he he [;)]

They might not total it unfortunately. My buddy just got his C32 back from the shop. Suffered $25,000 in damages, but the insurance company wouldn't total it cuz it's value was still well over that amount. This is when BMW's high resale value hurts you.

OOH, I didn't see you had a Vert.

I think if you had the coupe or sedan, it would've held up just as well if not even BETTER than the X5. Look at elussive's car.... that was a 40 - 50 mph side inpact, and his car, even though I imagine it is very safe... isn't built to keep an entire family safe like the 3 series.

I did not know that the vert doesn't have the HPS. I am not sure why it doesn't as the bags are contained in the pillars by the windshield.

I didn't know MrE wrecked his car. Must have missed that post.
