Spy shots of the next coupe. It's better looking than some previous spy shots that I've seen, though not quite as elegant as the current coupes. Also, what's with that new Audiesque style grille?

Overall, it isn't bad - certainly the best of the latest bunch of releases. What do you think?

What I don't like are the ultra visible shut-lines extending from the headlights to the front wheel arch and from the tail lights, along the rear bumber to the rear wheel arch. There's also another one going from the top of the taillights, along the side and then up to the rear windshield. Completely unnecessary and spoils the build-from-a-single-billet-of-steel look.

Just saw those pics at Autospies, too. I'm liking it.
I wonder if those are M4's given the side vents. It will probably be a more financially reasonable to a 6 series.
Any guesses on when it will go on sale? Doubtful anyone knows for sure; BMW salesperson today didn't even know if the Performance Package would be available on current coupes/cabrios as I've read about.

Thanks for posting the photos.

It looks less ugly than the new 5-series, but that isn't saying much.

I don't know what BMW is doing with their once-beautiful designs.

It appears they are copying Japanese styling (organic shapes, ugly blob shapes), and abandoning what makes many European cars so compelling (sleek lines, aggressive look).

And what's with all the body seams? There's a seam across the front grill, and another huge seam on the front fenders! My 330Ci has no seam on the grill/front, and no seams on the front fenders...

And that ugly, rubber-looking rear bumper, with another huge seam that wraps around the the sides...

Ugh.

Compare the styling to the 2004 Acura TSX...

Giant rubber-looking rear bumper with wrap-around tail light/bumper seam:

Shapeless profile, with a mild sheetmetal 'bend' providing a line front to rear line:

Is BMW doing design research in Japan, or what?

To me this new coupe has a little "Crysler-esque" look to the front facia, with that big open area under the kidneys and all, also the hood lines look a little overwrought, as if someone was wanting to create an odd visual confusion over the lines of the car... The seams are a bit disturbing to, but as in any case, in-person and up close this car might look much better. I certainly hope so since i will be in the market in a short year for either an end of the run e-46 or this baby... we'll see.... LogansRun

BMW is thinking of naming it the 4. That's cuz, traditionally, the even numbers were the coupes and the odd numbers were the sedans. 6 series coupe, 8 series coupe vs. 3 series sedan, 5 series sedan, 7 series sedan. It's not set in stone yet though.

I still don't like that trunk. Doesn't stick out as much so it's not as ugly like the 7, but the cut line still runs down too far the sides to make it stand out. It's like BMW thought the Volvo rear end looked good and decided to make it even uglier to avoid copyright problems or soemthing.

It's not too bad. Definitely much better looking than the 5-er or the 7-series. But with Bangle gone, maybe BMW will streamline the lines a bit better. The font needs more work for sure.

BTW, the rumor is for the M4/M3 to have E39's V8 engine this time around. It's lighter than the S54, so the weight balance should be improved, unless they stuff the car with more "features".

RE: The V8 in the upcoming M4

I wonder how they'll be able to tune the V8 to supercar status

Here in Australia Holden and Ford make pretty awesome V8's for about a third of the price of the current model M3...I'm thinking at this stage if the M4 is coming out with a V8, I might as well get a Holden Monaro. http://www.holden.com.au

Sarah, the Monaro V8 isn't an Aussie design. It's a Gen III imported from the US which is used in such cars as the Corvette et al. As far as the car itself is concerned, well, it's still just a Holden Commodore with go faster bits. In fact some of the prices for these souped up Commodores are getting pretty ridiculous, approaching $100k. Personally, I'd rather pay another $40k and get the M3 where the fit/finish, design, handling, technology is light-years ahead of any Commodore derivative.
