I highly recommend Redline products! Especially their drive line products, That's the only thing I have put into my e30 for the last 10 years.
I could not agree more. I have Redline products lubricating all three of my Bimmers!

If you live where it gets cold, you can really tell the difference when you have Redline in your transmission. When I was in Idaho I was amazed at the difference. Smoother shifting and a nice silky feel.

Red Line sells a Power Steering fluid as well. Change it once a year. I read somewhere BMW power steering is a relativly high working pressure system. The Red Line steering fluid was highly recommended to me. I'd like to recommend it to you as well.

Not to change the subject, but how often would you say you would need to change the gear oil? I checked my owners manual, to no avail... I'm not having any problems now, but Maine winters can make it difficult to get into 1st gear sometimes [rolleyes]

If your talking about the diff, I have changed mine (using Redline) once in five years. I will do it agan in five more. If you have no leaks there should be no problem with this.

Good news... Would that be considered a difficult task, changing the differential fluid? Or is that something that would be best left to a shop? I change all my other fluids, but the differential is something I never thought of, for some reason.

Its easy. There are two plugs on the side; open both to drain and seal the bottom to 41 ft. lb. torque. then fill the diff. till it starts running out the top fill plug and torque that cap down to 41 as well.
all good. [;)]

The differential is best changed about every 30K miles as per factory recommendation. Same for transmissions. I stretch it a little longer with the diff. A pressure pump makes it a lot easier and less messy to put fluid in the diff.

if you decide to change the diff fluid yourself loosen the fill hole 1st - so if you have any problem getting the drain plug out you wont be without fluid.
also, i think the recommended mileage for changing the diff fluid is every 30k, if i'm not mistaken. that's about when i change mine, though as i understand it most people never change it and the diffs last almost forever. i have over 260k miles on my car so i try to keep up on all the fluid changes - hoping to see 400k out of it. :)

My boss races a VW Golf, and he uses synthetic in his trans, saying it makes the syncros happier than with normal organic oil. He uses Lubro Moly, which I was going to use until I saw this thread. Anyone use Lubro Moly and then redline, or vice versa? I'd like to hear a comparison between those two.

I se Redline oils through out my car. I have an '87 325 with the 2.7 eta engine and I love it. I run 10w-40 redline motor oil(not the race only stuff, this has detergents). Transmission calls for ATF so I am using the Redline high-temp ATF, some say to use the D4 ATF anyone know the difference? In the differential I am using 75w-90. I get an average of 25 miles to the gallon city and highway driving, I live out in the country so I get to drive on country roads fast a lot.

I just put the 10w-40 in about 300 miles ago, and I have noticed a difference. The engine runs cooler, smoother, and more quiet. To me that only means one thing, less friction. And less friction equals longer engine life right? The tranny shifts a lot smoother then before, and with the gear oil I think it helped to improve the gas mileage. Stuff runs smoother and more quiet then before for sure.

I HIGHLY recomend using REDLINE synthetic everywhere if you car does not leak and/or burn oil. My BM has 175k on it now. I have only owned is for 7K now but it was well maintained with thorough records.

Since modern Jet turbine engines use oils that are made out of Polyol Ester Basestocks, and redline is also made out of the same basestocks its good enough for my engine.

So there is my rant... thanks for listening. I will continue to use redline even though I pay $7 a quart. But then again, I can run the oil a lot longer.... so its cheaper in the long run.

I hope you arent putting power steering fulid in your car... I believe ALL bmw's use Dexron-II ATF fluid for the power steering.

Hmm,

a little information in some hands can be dangerous.

Any BMW that came with petroleum based gear grease is subject to increased noise if it is converted to a synthetic lubricant.

Most in the trade use a rhyme:
"If you want to hear it whine, use Redline."

I have three BMWs with a combined mileage over 100 mila k, and that is millions to you cold beer drinkers, and I use a 80-90 EP gear grease from Walmart.

I do use a little Molybdenum Disulfate as an additive.

Be very careful of taking advise on the WEB.

Most are stating their experience on one car for a few years.

Later,

In some cases power steering fluid and auto trans. can be interchanged. But I only think that is for if you use auto fluid instead of power steering fluid in your power steering system
