Are "low beams" supposed to be this low?

Membim.... So I'm dying to find out. I have non-xens too; what were the instructions given to you by the dealership?

Ken, I'm not sure if you noticed this on yours, but my headlights actually seem uneven, in addition to them being pointed too low (imo). My passenger side projects about an inch higher than the driver side.

That is by design, since we drive on the right side of the road, so the driver's side light does not blind oncoming drivers, except in Push's case where both his lights blind oncoming drivers on purpose.[:D] [:D] [thumb] [burnout]

Fielding Yost....You are right...the passenger side low beam shines brighter to light the edge of the roadway a little more.

I talked to the dealer today and they told me to bring the car in. They said there is room to adjust the lights higher w/o going beyond the state inspection guidelines. Seems they've made this adjustment for others with the same complaint.

So, give your dealer a call and have them adjust yours to the state guidelines. I will be getting mine adjusted very shortly.

I wouldn't recommend anyone doing this on your own. There are state guidelines that must be adhered to.

Maybe something like this when you utilize your far-lights as "flashing lights" [thumb]:

§ 4513.17 Number of lights permitted; direction of beam; flashing, oscillating or rotating lights. -- RC § 4513.17 is affected by Am. Sub. S.B. 123 (149 v --), effective 1-1-2004. See the 2002 Legislative Bulletin No. 4 for the version effective 1-1-2004.

(C)(1) Flashing lights are prohibited on motor vehicles, except as a means for indicating a right or a left turn, or in the presence of a vehicular traffic hazard requiring unusual care in approaching, or overtaking or passing. This prohibition does not apply to emergency vehicles, road service vehicles servicing or towing a disabled vehicle, traffic line stripers, snow plows, rural mail delivery vehicles, vehicles as provided in section 4513.182 [4513.18.2] of the Revised Code, department of transportation maintenance vehicles, funeral hearses, funeral escort vehicles, and similar equipment operated by the department or local authorities, which shall be equipped with and display, when used on a street or highway for the special purpose necessitating such lights, a flashing, oscillating, or rotating amber light, but shall not display a flashing, oscillating, or rotating light of any other color, nor to vehicles or machinery permitted by section 4513.11 of the Revised Code to have a flashing red light.

It would be a VERY loose interpretation of that law to consider flashing your high beams as breaking that law. I think the intent was with reference to automatic or controlled flashing lights. Otherwise why would there be a feature on virtually every car to flash the high beams (someone has already mentioned this)?

Although I have heard of cops pulling people over for flashing their high beams when it wasn't normal to do so. Like when you see a speed trap and warn drivers coming the other way of the trap by flashing your high beams at them. But in that case they have other motives like revenue guiding them......

I agree,.. its a stretch.. but our city had some issues with people flashing their far lights and now they are strict about it. Now adays most people turn on their far lights for couple of seconds in order to send a message (not fast blink).

I guess by law the only time is when you can turn far lights on (or blink) is when there is no upcomming traffic or you are making an over-pass or other crazy shit like that. [^]

actually i just recently read an article about a guy getting a ticket for flashing his high beams to warn another driver of the speed trap in front of him. the cop saw it and gave him a ticket. the criminal got a lawyer and went to court. he won. guess why? it is a form of freedom of speech and expression that can not be taken away form mankind. so flashing your beams is anchored in your constitution!

i'll see if i can find the article.

Oh come on... the guy is not crminal and all of us do it from time to time; I see it as a carrying jesture. Its like a fish warning others that there is a hook with a worm on it.

He is no criminal. Please use your words wisely. [:I]

NOPE! saw it on the news the other day. [^]

It is not illegal to go with far lights ON on dark roads when nobody is ahead of you... but IT IS ILLEGAL to flash them.

If a cop sees you flashing them... even for innocent reasons,.. he has all the authority in the world to tocket you.

The law takes its root from the idea that you cannot immitate emergency vehicles that have flashing lights.

I guess you learn something everyday. [thumb]
I heard of a guy getting pulled over for flashing his head lights at on coming drivers to warn them of a police check point. He was pulled over for it because the police said he was violating police business or something like that. He then challenged and won sayin it was his freedom of speech. Just thought I would share.

Just to update anyone who's interested in my initial question.......
The dealer adjusted the low beams today! My wife drove it tonight and was amazed at how much further the roadway was lit up.

Just goes to show that, for whatever reason, the low beams were not adjusted correctly at the factory. That being said, you'd think the dealer would make this adjustment b4 it leaves the lot. Since others have made mention of it to them. This would have also saved an unnecessary time consuming trip back to the dealer. Could it be that the dealers want you to bring it back for a warranty repair so they could get re-imbursed for the labor charge by BMW?

hmmmmm?

Ken

ps..I wonder how many other people are out there driving with improperly (and potentially dangerous) adjusted head lights???
