Double pull to get out?

So I searched and didn't find anything, and don't have my owners manual handy to check, so I figured I'd put it to you guys -

Do you have to pull your door handle twice to get out? Once to unlock it, and the second to actually open the door? Man thats annoying... is it possible to disable the dredded double pull?!

FYI - it's a 03 325i. Yes, the door lock automatically when put in gear. No, I don't want to disable it. No, I don't want to unlock my doors before I get out. I want one pull and out like every other car on the planet!

Yes, mine is the same. I just hit the master unlock on the consol before trying to get out and it openes with one try. A small price to pay for the security, knowing everyone's locked in when your moving. (kids in the back)

Man... I hate the double pull!! I don't understand why its there, either. If a kids pulls it once, he's gonna pull it again! Why can't they just do the normal child-safty lock and call it a day?! Its crazy how such a minor thing can be so annoying...

It is like that to eliminate the unsightly (in BMWs mind) lock/unlock latches found on most door handles in other cars. Then they use the standard door post things so you can tell if its locked/unlocked at a glance from the inside or outside.

It is not meant as a safety feature.

The rear doors on my X5 also have the standard child locks for safety.

Just curious..... what's to stop a kid from opening the door in the rear? There are rear window locks (center red outlined console button) but no rear door lock disablers???

dudes,

it has to do with U.S. regulations/laws I guess. My European 3 series opens in one time. It doesn´t lock automatically when you drive away or close the door like most U.S. cars.

Hope it helps you

Doesn't really bother me anymore. I have gotten used to it...and I double pull so fast that I don't even think about it. It's kind of annoying when I have to tell new passengers how to get out. But I don't have too many new passengers very often anyway.

Mine doesn't lock either. But if I lock it, it requires 2 pulls to open.

The double-pull feature is a good one. It makes you think before opening a door.

You should always drive with your doors locked - it keeps the unwanted people out and it keeps the wanted people in. You should also activate the auto-lock feature. Mine does not have this but I'm going to have the dealer install the "module" (software) to enable it (is it tied to the OEM alarm, which I don't have?). Child locks on the back doors are mandatory, too, in my opinion. Right now my daughter is securely strapped into her carseat, but when she's able to let herself out of a booster seat or standard seatbelt, I'll be engaging the child locks.

It only takes a split second for a bad guy to walk up in your blind spot (and they know exactly what a blind spot is), yank open your door, and take your wallet, watch, car, loved ones, life, etc. It also only takes a spilt second for someone to accidentally open a door and hit the road.

Our pontiacs unlock automatically when you shut the engine off, which is kind of nice.

I just simply don't drive with my doors locked (unless i'm in the ghetto, becuase i live in the suburbs and like 90% of you, I lock my doors through city's. [rofl]

I like the auto-lock when I'm in gear, but despise the double-pull exit. I don't need to think about pulling the handle, I just want out in one motion. How often to you ponder the thought "Do I REALLY want out?! Whew! Good thing I got a second chance!" [joke]

Got nuttin' to do with US laws. The auto lock is a feature you can choose when the dealer programs your car. When your 3er is locked, is it still a single pull?!

I don't get this... what does the latch shown/hidden have anything to do with it? Can you expand on this engineering mystery?

The coolest feature I know of with the locks is on my new F-150. If the keys are in the ignition and you get out, lock the doors and shut the door... POP! The drivers door refused to lock w/ the keys in it. Man that's gonna save me someday!

My dealer said that it is a function of having auto locking enabled. I have auto locking and mine requires two pulls. From your post, this seems to agree with what the dealer said.

Does anyone in the US not have auto locking enabled? Does it require two pulls?

But i don't know whta you mean double pull. I only pull once and its open... And how do you make the locks go down when you take off??????

I'm in the US, I don't have "auto-lock", my doors require 2 pulls to open when I have the doors locked using the central locking switch on the middle console. One pull unlocks the door, the second pull opens the door. Alternatively, I can use the central switch to unlock all doors, then it's just one pull to open.

The dealer said that for $50, they can install a module that will enable my doors to automatically lock once I reach a certain speed (I think about 10 miles per hour). The module will also let my hazards flash when I use my key fob to lock/unlock the doors. I don't have the BMW alarm.

There is a dealer programmable option to lock the doors automatically. When you are going more than about 5 mph the doors lock. You have to pull the handle twice to open the door - once to "cock" it, the second time "pulls the trigger" so to speak.

I just mean that too many people just pop their doors open without thinking - I've seen morons just throw the door open into the path of oncoming traffic and step right out (usually on a cell phone). Have you ever seen a door get ripped off by an oncoming car? It's funny as hell - I saw a door get yanked right off a car, yanked right out of the guy's hand.

I'm just one of those guys who always tries to be acutely aware of his surroundings at all times. I think too much sometimes.... [:p]
