helps to see your shifter at night better - somewhat important if you drive manual, I suppose? I know where my gears are so I don't need it to see where I'm shifting, but some folks might.

other then that - you nailed it on the head, mood lighting! [:)]

I have always known about the amber lights...but they really don't seem to add much. Maybe a little subtle mood lighting...Does any one know of any practical use of them?
I don't think BMW was going for mood lighting here. They add very subtle light to those things that don't have backlighting (like gear shift knob, ashtray cover and overall panel surfaces).

My X5 also has them in the back seat....they shine down from the roof centered dome light so you can see the cupholder, ashtray, rear vent controls and vent, and your girlfriend if you like it with the lights on.

The "official" name for that amber light is "BMW Ambient Lighting". I noticed it in my convertible when driving at night with the top down. I was holding a business card and needed to see the address... instead of hitting one of the map lights, I just held it near the gearshift and was pleasantly surprised that I could read the card without drawing too much attention to myself. (my nav screen was switched off at the time). Pretty nice. Just another example of the detail BMW ergonomists go to when designing the interiors.

Heres one for the group... Some dummy tried to help themselves to my car (unsuccessfully) through the drivers door keyhole with a screwdriver [boxface]. I responded by replacing the keylock with a nice cap, that's all well and good, but now I cannot rollup my windows & moonroof with the keyhole/remote combo. Is there an option which I can set that will allow me to do this through the remote? I have heard rumors that Euro models allow window rollup via remote, but US models do not due to liability reasons.

Also where would I be able to procure a first aid kit?

Look right above your hood release (next to your left foot) that is your trunk release it almost looks like part of the hinge. The trunk will not fly open, but you will hear a click and should notice the "door ajar" indicator on the instrument panel warning of an open trunk. Get out, and lift the lid.
I'll go take a couple pictures and post them. If they dont turn out tonight I'll reshoot tomorrow in the daylight.

there's a trunk release inside? [ohcrap] i didn't know that.. to open teh trunk from outside, have all the doors unlocked, and push on a rubber btn between the license plate lights.

as for the whole remote, open/close deal. it's really cool, except my remote range is so pathetic and the windows rolls down/up so slow that i end up just hanging out by the car for good 10-15 secs.. i wish my remote had a better range.. any easter eggs for that? ^^;;

You gotta be kidding me, right? Don't all newer cars have trunk release somewhere inside? Even my dad's 97 avalon has the trunk release inside, it is hidden in the glove compartment but it is there.

About the range, I think it increases a little if you put the remote under your chin or something. I don't know, I don't even have an alarm.

How about a new battery? I had to replace mine a while back, the range was getting so poor...I was afraid I might have to take it to the dealership since the key fob hand-shakes codes with the car, blah blah.

Well, you can just pop in a new battery, it's not a big deal. I just went over to Radio Shack and they had all those little watch batteries.

I dont know why putting the remote under your chin works (for any car)???? It just does...
Anyhow, the rubber button location above the licence plate is accurate, I'll post some pictures of the other release tomorrow when it is light out.

well the new keys are actually have recharging batteries, while the key's in the ignition. (dun know when they added that in..) and the range has always been the same, short and pathetic, from day one..

andreyiv: there's no need for trunk release on the inside, because you can open it like a door from outside.

since we all have varying models, years, etc. there's bound to be some options that are there, and those that aren't. i know for one, in the first gen a4s, you actually push in the key hole while the car's unlocked to open the trunk. last integras had a latch in the trunk to open the hatch back, so not every car has a release on the inside, but at least a way to open them w/out inserting the key into the trunk.

back 2 my question..... [:)]

how can i open my trunk from the outside...or inside...without using my remote...there is no lever and i cant "find" the button to do it from outside
We don't get one. I searched too, and found the 'official' response - 2000 323i's don't have a lever inside to do that.

Just a reception trick, sorta like the old wives tale about being able to pick up radio signals with the old school tooth fillings.

The chin trick doesn't work for me, I need new batteries.. Was it a pain to get your remote back together aNoodle?

I have a 2000 323Ci, and it does have a button to open up the trunk from inside of the car, right above of the hood open latch.

But, I can find the way to make the side mirror auto-tilt feature works. When I put my gear to R position, the rear view mirror on the passenger side won't lowered itself automatically so that I can see the curb for parking. Even I leave the side mirror controlling button to the right (passenger side) when I was doing it. And there is not neutural position for that button...

Any ideas???!?! anyone???

Thanks all!!

I thought that the passenger side tilt feature was a setup option, along with the daytime running lights and autolock... I could be wrong- just make sure that the adjustment for the mirror is not in the passenger mirror position - it disables the tilt feature....

The passenger side mirror reverse tip will only happen when the switch is in position to adjust the drivers side mirror. sliding the selector towards the passenger side will disable the tip feature. there is no neutral position in my 03 325Ci either (weird)

A lot of us with recent cabrios can open the top with the remote by pushing unlock twice, holding it down the second time. Have you tried it, Kirby? You'd think if there really was a liability issue, there'd be NO WAY they'd let a car leave the dealer with it.

One thing I learned recently is that the adaptive headlights only work in auto mode.

I have tried to leave the switch in position of adjusting driver-side mirror, but it still does not work.. Maybe this is the one of the option that I need to bring the car back to the dealer to set it??
